provides an overview of its treatment of the collection in subsequent

ical issues in relation to a text Blake printed and published himself.
CHAPTER ONE

Producing Songs: In a Book that All May Read
This chapter examines the composition and printing process of Songs,
from its origins in Blake s Poetical Sketches, An Island in the Moon,
and manuscript notebook, to its inscription on copper as an illumi¬
nated book, copies of which were produced by Blake at intervals
throughout his lifetime.
CHAPTER TWO

Blake s Contemporaries on Songs: Simplicity, Madness, Genius, and
Swedenborgianism
Following a brief discussion of Songs marketing and sale, this chap¬
ter surveys important, albeit miscellaneous, early responses by
Romantic-period writers, including Benjamin Heath Malkin, Henry
Crabb Robinson, William Hazlitt, William Wordsworth, Charles Lamb,
and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It also contains definitions and discus¬
sions of these writers critical vocabulary and affiliations.

Reviving Blake in the 1820s and 1830s: Obituaries, Biographies, and
the First New Editions
After commenting on obituaries of Blake, this chapter considers early,
broadly admiring, posthumous biographies by John Thomas Smith
and Allan Cunningham, before turning to examine the first re-edition
of Songs by John James Garth Wilkinson.

Enshrining Blake in the 1860s and 1870s: Pre-Raphaelitism, Aestheticism,
and Counter-Attack
This chapter addresses landmark mid-Victorian celebrations of Songs
by Alexander Gilchrist and A. C. Swinburne (an Aestheticist), setting
them amid the context of further positive assessments by D. G.
Rossetti (a
Pre-Raphaelite), James Thomson, and James Smetham.
The chapter closes by pitting against these the more negative com¬
ments of Henry G. Hewlett.

Blake and the Moderns: Symbolism and Scholarship
This chapter explores the endorsement of Songs by William Butler Yeats and
Edwin Ellis in the 1890s, before moving on to the more ambivalent response
of T. S. Eliot in the early twentieth century. It concludes with a discussion of
scholarly responses by S. Foster Damon and Geoffrey Keynes.

The Post-War Foundations: System, Myth, and History
This chapter addresses the foundations of post-war Blake criticism in
the academy, focusing, especially, on the work of the three major
critics Northrop Frye, David V. Erdman, and Harold Bloom, and their
development of Blake Studies towards systematic accounts, respec¬
tively, of the role of myth, history, and apocalypse in the poems.

This chapter looks at the emergence of new approaches to Songs in

1960s,
including accounts of the formal qualities of individual
poems under the rubric of Romanticism, and more ideologically
inflected criticism that addressed Blake in terms of politics, psychol¬
ogy, and gender.

Textuality and the
Materiality of the Book
In this chapter, we address the influence of
poststructuralist
theory
on ideas of Blake s textuality, the renewal of emphasis on composite
art in W. J. T. Mitchell s work, and the emergence of criticism focused
on Songs as a book associated with Robert Essick and Joseph
Viscomi.

Worlding Blake Today: Past, Present and Future Sees
This chapter addresses the most recent trends in Blake criticism,
including approaches to Songs that have developed issues relating to
gender and the body, eco-criticism, and post-colonialism. It ends with
a discussion of the emergence of critical interest in reception studies
of Songs.
