Horvat
u svojim političkim biografijama
-
Supilo:
Život jednog hrvat¬
skog političara
(1938),
Ante Starčević: Kulturno-povjesna slika
(1940)
i Ljude¬
vit Gaj: Njegov život, njegovo doba
(1975) -
povijest pretvara u pripovijest na
točno određen način: izabire lik nacionalnog velikana (nasuprot nacional¬
nom junaku) te mu pristupa tako da političku povijest uklapa u kulturnu.
Nadalje, skrupulozno postupa
s
izvorima, ali sa sviješću da je svaki govor
о
prošlom relativan te da historiografija nikada ne može dati zadnju riječ
о
povijesti. Umjesto historiografskog pristupa i događajne povijesti
Horvat
bira umijeće portretiranja kako bi naglasio svoj individualistički pristup:
ma koliko iscrpno prikazivao društveno-ekonomsku situaciju u prošlosti,
uvijek daje do znanja da su političke osobe te koje presudno pokreću zbi¬
vanja. Horvatov povijesni angažman u biografijama ima značajne paralele
u njegovu autobiografskom diskursu i publicističkom radu. Naime,
Horvat
nacionalne velikane portretira sličnim
toposima
kao i sebe, što znači da i
sebe, publicista, vidi kao političkog čimbenika. Nadalje, dok u biografijama
daje uzore za političku djelatnost, u feljtonima otvoreno agitira za određe¬
ne ideološke opcije (liberalizam i demokraciju nasuprot boljševizma, fa¬
šizma i nacizma), tako da se pokazuje daje njegov historiografski rad u
službi političkog angažmana. Povezanost Horvatova publicističkog, auto¬
biografskog i biografskog diskursa očituje se u jedinstvenom imaginariju
u kojem je važna predodžba revolucija kao nagla promjena u društvenoj
ideologiji, nasuprot evoluciji. Konceptualna

stoji nasuprot metafori povijesti kao rijeke? povijesne mase poistovjećene
su s
divljim prirodnim silama, a važnost pojedinca naglašena metaforom
portreta

koja je ujedno glavni kompozicijski postupak i srž imaginarija.

Introduction
Josip
Horvat
(1896-1968)
is the author of many
feuilletons
and books
written mainly in the years preceding the Second World War. After the war
his work came under censorship because of his liberal views, which con¬
sequently influenced his reception among critics. The present analysis of
three political biographies
-
Supilo: Život
jednog hrvatskog političara
(1938),
Ante Starčević: Kulturno-povjesna slika
(1940)
i Ljudevit Gaj: Njegov život,
njegovo doba
(1975) -
is the first monograph on
Horvat.
Methods
In
Horvaťs
biographic discourse, seen as a linguistic representation of re¬
ality, different aspects of genre, narration and style are analyzed and com¬
pared to his other publicist writings
-
namely the
historiographie, feuille-
tonistic and critical texts
-
in order to establish the way in which the aut¬
hor constructs his meanings, what are his aims as a narrator, and how he
creates his complex political imagery.
Results
Horvat
turns history into story in a specific way: he picks a great natio¬
nal figure (as opposed to a national hero) and in his approach to the su¬
bject he integrates political history into cultural history; furthermore, he is
scrupulous about references, but always with the awareness that everything
we say about the past can be relativized and that historiography can never
give the last word about history. Instead of the
historiographie
approach,
centering on a sequence of events presented in chronological order,
Hor¬
vat
chooses to make a skillful portrait of his subjects, in order to stress his
individualistic approach: no matter how thoroughly he describes the so¬
cio-economic situation in the past, he always makes it clear that the poli¬
tical individuals are those that set the key events in motion. The political

Horvat shows
in his biographies finds
important
parallels
in his autobiographic discourse and publicist writings. Specifically,
Horvat
portrays the great national figures with the similar
topoi
he uses to des¬
cribe himself, which means that he also sees himself, a publicist, as a poli¬
tical agent. Moreover, while in biographies he states the ideals of political
activity, in the
feuilletons
he openly agitates for specific ideological opti¬
ons (liberalism and democracy, as opposed to Bolshevism, fascism and
Nazism), showing that his
historiographie
work is in service of his politi¬
cal activity. He describes politics using the metaphors from the semantic
fields of battle and drama, but it is also represented as a broad social ac¬
tivity which plays a critical role in shaping the individuals and has many
practical and moral repercussions.
Discussion
Although
Horvat
expresses his ideology openly, he also uses various styli¬
stic devices (particularly antithesis and metaphor), thus creating expre¬
ssive publicist, autobiographic and biographic discourses that share the
common unique imagery. One of the most important ideas in this imagery
is that of revolution, seen as a sudden change in society's ideology, oppo¬
site of evolution
-
hence the metaphorical contrast of the concepts

old that stands opposite of river as the metaphor for history. Furthermore,
drawing from the idea of the close connection between people and their
land,
Horvat
creates geopolitical and biopolitical metaphors {e.g. father¬
hood). Historical masses are identified with images of unbridled natu¬
ral forces, and importance of the individual is emphasized by the portra¬
it metaphor
-
the portrait is at the same time the core of his imagery, the
main compositional device and the link that connects historiography, po¬
litics and publicist work: the great national figures he thus portrays be¬
come interlocutors of Horvats contemporaries, in order to shape and set
the course of social events.
