Summary
The book aims to create a collective biographical portrait of the
1st
Pol¬
ish Armoured Division through examination of the individual fates of its
veterans. Instead of focusing on military plans (a subject already well-served
by the existing literature), we focus here on people s experiences of their
participation in the war. By interviewing a relatively large number of former
soldiers of the division, and employing an oral history methodology, we tried
to enhance the existing knowledge about this unit from a non-elite perspec¬
tive. Biographical accounts of veterans of the division living in Poland were
compiled in the years
2009-2012,
and further supplemented by interviews
conducted in the UK and Belgium, in order to learn more about the indi¬
vidual experiences of ordinary soldiers who often experienced the war in
a totally different way from their superiors. In short, this book does not focus
on the combat merits of the
1st
Armoured Division, but instead shows how
its soldiers lived.
The first part of the publication presents the project of recording the ac¬
counts of veterans and details how this source material was developed for
publication purposes. To introduce the reader to the history of one of the most
famous Polish military units, the book describes its history and discusses the
related literature. The authors have tried to identify basic interpretive clues ,
and hence suggest possible ways to read the biographical narratives that re¬
sulted from the research conducted after the collection of the source mate¬
rial. Here issues of time and space in narratives are presented and discussed,
along with an examination of the conflict between individual identity and the
uniformity and homogenization required by the military, and finally problems
connected with transnational experiences and conflicting loyalties.
Records of the accounts of former soldiers of the
1st
Armoured Division
constitute the main part of this publication. Building on many hours of bio¬
graphical interviews, these accounts are treated as a kind of source text ;
from them the authors have selected, on the one hand, the most expressive and
illustrative excerpts, and on the other, those describing normal daily service
in the unit. Each subsequent selection of sources begins with an introductory
historical comment.

The first part of the published accounts presents selected biographies that
represent the four paths leading to the division. Among the narrators were:
1)
veterans of the
1st
Armoured Division who were evacuated via Romania
or Hungary following Poland s defeat in the early stages of World War II;
upon reaching the Polish Armed Forces in the west they fought alongside the
Western Allies;
2)
Polish citizens residing in eastern Poland (the so-called
Kresy
or Borderlands), occupied by the Soviet Union in September
1939,
deported to Kazakhstan and Siberia, who, along with the army of General
Władysław
Anders, went to the Middle East and consequently ended up in
the UK;
3)
Allied prisoners of war: Poles mainly originating from
Gdańsk
Pomerania
and Silesia, who found themselves under German occupation and
were called to serve in the
Wehrmacht
before they were taken into captivity;
4)
prisoners liberated from German POW camps, concentration camps, soldiers
of the Polish Underground State, participants in the Warsaw uprising of
1944.
The second part shows the realities of war from the perspective of the sol¬
diers of the
1st
Armoured Division. Rather than presenting a few selected
figures, the authors favoured instead a thematic arrangement of the successive
phases of collective biography. Not only does this result in a wide panorama of
the experience of war, it also leads to a much greater number of voices of heroes
being heard. They talk about their memories of service before heading to the
front: the training, how they spent their time on leave, and relations with the
civilian population in Scotland. The result is a polyphonic narrative telling the
story of how these men became soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West.
The largest part of the book deals with memories from the front. Veterans
recall their first experience of war, the battle of
Falaise,
talk about the death
of their friends, their commanders, but also about how people received them
in the liberated cities in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Artillerymen,
tankers, and quartermasters talk about the specifics of service in their subu-
nits. Here there are also controversial passages about the behaviour of soldiers
towards POWs. Recalling the period of service after the war, when the division
undertook occupation duties in Germany in
1945-1947,
veterans talk about
organizing the life of Polish displaced persons ( DP ) and the dilemma of
whether to return to their home country or remain in exile for various political,
economic or private reasons. There are also interesting passages on the diffi¬
cult relations between Polish soldiers and the German population.
The final part of the memories focuses on descriptions of the impact the war¬
time experiences had on the veterans post-war lives, both those who returned
to Poland and those who remained in exile in Britain, Canada and Belgium.
Polish veterans describe the problems posed by the communist authorities

and how they adapted to the new reality, while the exiled veterans talk of
acclimatising to a foreign environment. In the six decades following the war
the Maczkowcy soldiers became actors in the dynamically changing politics
of memory of both the Poles and their countries of residence. All former sol¬
diers underline their commitment to veteran activities and the transmission
and cultivation of the tradition, which suggests that being a soldier is still an
important part of their identity.
In the afterword of this book (for which the authors would like to thank
Dr.
Piotr Filipkowski
and Dr. Joanna Wawrzyniak, who were also involved
in this research project) there is both a discussion of the biographical method
and a contextualization of the biographies of these soldiers within the wartime
experiences of Polish society. We hope that this book will become a voice in
the debate on Polish memory of World War II and ways to research it.
The publication is enriched with archive photographs taken from the family
collections of the veterans. All the accounts recorded for this book can be ac¬
cessed in the Archives of Oral History in the
