Summary
The history of archaeological research in the area between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
This dissertation is devoted to the history of the passion for „antiquities" and the history of
archaeological discoveries in the area between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers, which abounds with
archaeological artefacts, from the beginning of the nineteenth century until
1918.
For most of this
period, these areas were under the Russian rule as part of the Polish Kingdom under the separate
Kielce
and
Radom
guberniyas. In the first half of the nineteenth century in the region gradually
developed an interest in national antiquities and archaeology. It was manifested by collecting ac¬
cidentally found historical artefacts and sending information to the press and popular journals and
scientific societies (in Warsaw and Cracow). The largest and most comprehensive collections of
historical artefacts belonged to the landowner
Konstanty Świdziński
and head of the
Kielce po
viat
Tomasz Zielinski.
They contained purely archaeological artefacts (both native to the area, as well
as antique and even Egyptian ones) and many other items, decorative art and fine art objects. In
this period there were also organized archaeological tours undertaken to study the history of the
region, including its monuments, especially architecture. One of these trips was organized in
1851
by
Franciszek Maksymilian Sobieszczański
on the initiative of the Warsaw Scientific District
superintendent
Pawel Mukhanov.
It was also aimed to examine urns discovered by accident in
the village Nietulisko
Duże.
This expedition resulted in archaeological excavations, the first in
the area between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers (in Nietulisko and in the vicinity of the village of
Kotarszyn).
In the 1870s and 1880s an increasing number of archaeological excavations, sometimes mul-
tiseasonal, was conducted in the area between the Vistula and the
Pilica
rivers. An example is
the excavation carried out in
Łęgonice
(on the cemetery from the period of Roman influence) by
the landowner Kalikst Jagmin. They are one the best-documented excavations in this area. The
motivation for these excavations, expressed then by many researchers, was to save archaeologi¬
cal sites threatened by destruction by nature or earthworks. Salvage research in many sites of the
Kielce
and
Pińczów
poviats were undertaken by Fr.
Władysław Siarkowski,
one of the pioneers
of archaeological research in the region. The archaeological excavations carried out in the
Ojców
Jura caves became prominent both in terms of the scale of the work undertaken and the very
interesting results they produced. They were organized by individual enthusiasts of archaeol¬
ogy, such as Count Jan Zawisza, the first explorer of those caves. He examined, amongst others,
Mammoth Cave in
Ojców,
in which he found the remains of settlements from the Paleolithic and

Neolithic times. It also happened that inspiration came from the Polish scientific institutions, as it
did in the case of the geologist and archaeologist Gotfryd Ossowski, who conducted excavations
in the caves on behalf of the Academy of Sciences in Cracow. His most important discovery was
related to Maszycka Cave where he found, amongst others, numerous artefacts of the Paleolithic
Magdalenian culture together with bone remains of victims of cannibalism. Another researcher of
the
Ojców
caves was a German geologist from
Wrocław
Carl Ferdinand
Römer,
who undertook
excavations at several sites, including Bat Cave in Jerzmanowice. The spectacular results of the
three archaeologists, published and presented at international archaeological congresses, became
known in Europe and were referred to in the works of prominent European prehistorians (such
as: A. and
G. de
Mortillet, M. Hoernes, H. Breuil). These findings initiated Paleolithic studies
on the territory of Poland, and also pointed to the existence of the traces of human groups from
younger prehistoric periods, mainly the Neolithic as well as the Bronze and Iron Ages and from
the historical times.
Characteristic of the period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the Vistula
and
Pilica
rivers was a clear intensification of archaeological research. Their main aim was to
locate as many archaeological sites containing artefacts as possible, as well as the publishing
of their findings and securing artefacts by placing them in museums. The then conducted ex¬
tensive surface research and excavations were mostly the result of individual initiatives of local
researchers, including primarily
Stanisław
J.
Czarnowski (by profession a lawyer and journalist),
and
Zdzisław
Lenartowicz (painter) and the Warsaw researchers, Marian Wawrzeniecki (also a
painter) and
Erazm Majewski
(manufacturer). Majewski's field research, that covered several
poviats of the
Kielce
Gubernyia, as well as his theoretical studies, made possible to improve the
knowledge of microlitic flint tools dating back to the Mesolithic period. Their culmination was the
first monograph of
Stopnica
poviat developed by this archaeologist, being the first archaeological
monograph of a considerable area on the Polish territory. In particular, Czamowski was a tireless
field researcher. In the southern part of the
Kielce
Guberniya he recordered about
130
caves and
rock shelters, and in a high percentage of them he carried out excavations. His research resulted
in the discovery of the finds from all periods of prehistoric remains, predominantly Neolithic
settlements, as well as from historical times. The scale of an excavation site was limited by the
size of financial resources at the disposal of the then archaeologists, who generally used their
own funds. All of the above mentioned researchers, who had no opportunity to acquire formal
archaeological training, were amateurs, and they conducted field research on the trial and error
basis. Despite these limitations, many valuable archaeological finds were made in the discussed
area. The most significant ones include localization and examination of multicultural sites, such
as those in the localities:
Orońsko,
Oblas
(Wawrzeniecki) Beszowa,
Żerniki Dolne
(Majewski),
Iwanowice
(Czarnowski). Of a particular importance was the discovery and initial examination
by Lenartowicz of the Neolithic burial in
Złota
near
Sandomierz.
An important achievement was
the investigation by Wawrzeniecki of barrow objects from the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages
in
Kowary, Rosiej
owie,
Gruszów
and the preparation and publication of the first measurements,
plans and description of an early settlement in
Stradów.
Of a great importance for the further development of archaeology was the founding of the
Polish Country Lovers' Society
(PTK)
and the establishment of its branch offices in the area
between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers. This gave rise to the institutional research initiatives in the
field of archaeology in the region. The tasks of the branches and museums which were created was
to initiate archaeological research as well as to gather and describe the collections of acquired ar¬
tefacts. Earlier such artefacts were transferred to the museums in Cracow or Warsaw or remained
in private collections. The collections were kept in the
PTK
museums. They were described sci¬
entifically, if it was possible, and made available to visitors as well as for research. Special men¬
tion should be made of the
PTK
Museum in
Kielce,
which operated continuously since
1908.

preserved interesting artefacts from different prehistoric eras (especially the Neolithic specimens
from the village of
Złota).
During this period, in the area between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers, in addition to the above-
mentioned researchers, a new generation of archaeologists appeared. They were better prepared
scientifically and applied modern methods of field research. Most of them were students of
Erazm
Majewski: Leon
Kozłowski
and Stefan Krukowski, who continued to explore the
Ojców
caves,
yielding interesting results. There have been many other valuable findings, among which should
be mentioned an investigation by
Kozłowski
of three multicultural sites in Iwanowice and the
discovery of the
Lusatian
culture burial ground by Lenartowicz in Ludwikowo near Lopuszno.
The rare and spectacular discoveries also include: finding of the two Celtic graves in iwanowice
and an accidental discovery of single „Hun" burials (from the Migration Period) at
Przemęczany
and Jakuszowice.
Occasionally, archaeological research was conducted at that time by amateur enthusiasts of
archeology. Among them were many priests who, in the course of service in their parishes, were
confronted with archaeological findings. The secured accidentally found artefacts and gathered
their collections, which they later often passed on to museums.
Archaelogical findings conducted in the area between the Vistula and
Pilica
rivers gave rise to
the development of the knowledge of the prehistory of the region. They also made a major contri¬
bution to the development of Polish archaeology, especially prehistoric archaeology, and helped
to shape it as an independent scientific discipline.
