For those who might imagine that multinational plantations are merely leftovers
of colonial economies and labour regimes, here is a book that powerfully forces one
to think again. In this excellent, if sobering, collection of essays on the past, pre¬
sent and future of the oil palm industry in Southeast Asia, the reader is plunged
into some of the most economically dramatic, environmentally damaging sites of
expanding commodity production in the twenty-first century. In tracing the
changing uses of palm oil and projections for which it will be put in the future,
these studies of palm oil cultivation, processing, and management address the
key and urgent problems looming before the world today. No commodity is more
implicated in new forms of land dispossession, capital investment, European Union
policies on biofuels, and the control (and lack of regulation) on greenhouse gases.
This collection is a disquieting window on to the future and not least on to the
new ways in which
NGOs,
indigenous communities, and labour organizations
are demanding accountability for projects and contracts that over the last three
decades have been implicated in the social and environmental ecologies of so
many lives.
Ann Laura
Stoler,
The New School for Social Research, New York
This engaged and vital edited volume brings together the varied viewpoints
of academics, consultants and activists all concerned with the astonishing
expansion of palm oil as a globally traded commodity. It reveals how this complex,
contested and controversial expression of globalization transcends narrow national
and sectoral interests, stimulating a transnational exchange of goods, capital and
labour, as well as laws, norms, values and even understanding. Compelling,
readable and insightful, the study shows that corporate responses to civil society s
concerns about palm oil s role in global warming, human rights abuses, land
grabbing and biodiversity loss, now need to be complemented by legal, regulatory
and governance reforms to be effective.
Marcus Colchester, Director, Forest Peoples Programme
...
an informative and well-written account of the challenges facing the production
of oil palm. Through the use of case studies the authors detail the issues faced and
the steps taken to produce sustainable palm oil
