The Forgotten Heritage of
Nowa Huta- Mogiła
Seuen years ago the Nouja
Huta
branch of
the Historical Museum of the City of
Кгакош
launched the first
enhibition in
the series
called The Forgotten Heritage of
Nowa Huta,
luhich has been deuoted to the history of
particular uillages in the uicinity of
Кгакош
from their origins to
1949.
In
2012,
the focus
of another display in that series has been on
Mogiła,
the best
кпошп
of these uillages,
luhich has for centuries been a destination
forthe pilgrims uisitingthe Cistercian Sanctu¬
ary of the Holy Cross and the mound built to
commemorate the legendary Princess Wanda.
A rare eHception in that respect, the mhole
area of today s Nouja
Huta
шаѕ
thoroughly an¬
alysed in archaeological terms; the earthujorks
connected Luith constructing the metallurgical
сотріен
and the housing estates forthe
шогк-
ers
tűére
preceded by diggings. The finds from
Mogiła
put on display are representatiue of all
the cultures that had occurred there ouer a span
from the earliest settlements until recorded his¬
tory. They offer an insight into human actiuity
in this area during the last
20,000
years. Built
probably in the 7th or 8th century, Wanda Mound
is the oldest prehistoric monument in
Mogiła.
The tumulus is the piuot of one of the sections
of the eKhibition.
A substantial part of the display has been
deuoted to the history of the Cistercian ab¬
bey, ujhich

established in
Mogiła
in
1222.
A small part of the display has been arranged
to encompass the nearly
800
years of the
presence of the Cistercians at the place inhere
the Riuer
Dłubnia
tloujs into the Vistula. As a
consequence, the selection of exhibits is but a
fraction of the abundant heritage kept at the
monastery in
Mogiła
as

seums and archiues.
