VALUES AND VIOLENCE
SUMMARY
In the first part of a book is analysed the relationship
between technology of government and a destruction of
the values in the context of a changes in a society in
this territory: conquest of a democracy, spread of a free
market, globalization of a capital, paradoxes of a coloni¬
alism and multiculturalism as a modus of affirmation
of superiority of illuminated countries. He grounded on
the europocentric distance and on a respecting of local
cultures, without grounding it in the own culture.
In the second part the main concern of the article is
an analysis of the tradition of nationalism, its being tradi-
tionalized, its using force and manipulation as its strut.
The paper also deals with manipulation of nationalism,
its nostalgia for the past and fear of the future, its selec¬
tive recollections being put into function, an analysis of
sensitive topics, stereotypes about oneself and others,
selective notions of freedom, the discrepancy between
a small number of nations and their megalomaniac ide¬
as of a „great state" as the main cause of the conflict in
the Balkans in the 20th century. The analysis is aimed
at proclaiming a balanced attitude towards belonging to
an ethnicity, recognizing the ethnicity and its allotropes
as both ancient and modern, showing at the same time
an optimistic point of view that most demands of ethnic
and national groups are not contrary to the liberal con¬
cepts of individual freedom and social justice.

In the third part is developed the discussion about
education as a line of expectations in which a society
thrives to promote its values and customs by giving pre¬
ference to certain issues of knowledge transfer, choice
of means for accomplishment of the goals, and anti-in-
tellectualism as the resistance to changes, rationality,
dedication, critical thinking and development of the
thinking skill, turns us back, like in a mirror, on the
analysis of the society as a whole, walking freely in the
different areas. Such an effort seems valuable becau¬
se of our intellectual poverty which was provoked by
specialisation and faith, without distant ourselves from
thinking that the development of the new technologies
will solve all our problems. There is a strong feeling of
uncomfortable, especially among the intellectuals, who
have always cultivated the illusion that their opinion
matters, against the fact that the knowledge and power
are distinguished as the rationality and freedom. Anti-
intellectualism is manifested as a special kind of a spiri¬
tual aggression.
In the four part suggests the approach that looks
at the violence of modern time as a total social phaeno-
menon, almost universal, regardless of relevant societi¬
es, method of their social and economic organization,
natural environment and variable intensity of the violet
activity. Althought it has its own characteristics and a
relative autonomy, basically, violence is not of epipheno-
menal nature, but it is involved in the network within
the social power relations, and manifested as a social
activity directed towards its confirmation and strengthe¬
ning, or towards challenging and changing of social po¬
wer relations, even in cases when violence is of verbal or
symbolic nature. In its social background, there are re¬
lations of social inequality, which by itself is of conflict
nature, regardless of the type of their manifestation, so
that violence is a syndrome of the existence of certain
conflict circumstances and serious disturbances within
the contradictory body of the social being, even when
such disturbances are latent, and at first sight almost
invisible. The nature of social conflicts has a direct im¬
pact both to opportunities for occurrence of violence
and its intensity. Necessary condition for its successful
control is the reconstruction of legitimacy, where power
resides in legitimacy and not in violence. It includes al¬
so the transformation of sovereignity and the role of so¬
ciety within the „new power geography" to which organi¬
zed violence within the globalization process represents
the most serious challenge.
This one, who ignored relationship between values
and violence in analyses of contemporary events, doing
it for the own bed, on a damage of the civilization and
humility.
