Summary
Diplomatic relations between the United States and the Czechoslovak Re¬
public were established shortly after the declaration of sovereignty in Oc¬
tober
1948
and were maintained at the levels matching the interests of both
states for the next period. The post-war „isolationism of the USA on the
one hand and the life necessity of Czechoslovakia to build allied relations,
especially with France, on the other hand, along with some financial issues,
resulted in no substantial development of the Czechoslovak-American po¬
litical and economic relations in the inter-war period. After the break-up of
Czechoslovakia in mid-March
1939,
the United States didn t accept the new
legal status and they allowed the Czechoslovak embassy in Washington to
continue to operate. In July
1941,
the Government of the United States ac¬
cepted the Czechoslovak exile government in London diplomatically, and
this fact became the starting point for the development of mutual relations
during the Second World War. At the end of the war, in the second half of
April
1945,
the U.S. Army entered the Czechoslovak territory and occupied
part of the country. This was at the time when the treaty of alliance be¬
tween Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union had been concluded for almost
a year and a half. The alliance with the Soviet Union, along with nation¬
alization, which also affected the American property in Czechoslovakia,
became an insurmountable obstacle to the development of closer political
and economic relations between the United States and Czechoslovakia on
the threshold of the peace time. The inability to find common ground was
already manifested in connection with efforts of the Czechoslovak political
circles to close an agreement on administration in the Czechoslovak terri¬
tory occupied by the U.S. Military with the relevant U.S. Authorities. A lit¬
tle later, this trend was reflected in the reluctance of the United States to
provide Czechoslovakia larger loans for the post-war economic recovery. In
mid-year
1947,
when Czechoslovakia refused to participate in negotiations
on the Marshall Plan in Paris because of the open pressure of the Soviet

leadership,
the intensity of mutual misunderstanding deepened. As a re¬
sult oft the government crisis in Czechoslovakia in Februaryl948
,
and after
the seizure of power by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, the hopes
for improved relations between the United States and the Czechoslovak Re¬
public were destroyed.
