After the refusal of Adem Demaçi to become a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in the 1950's of the past century; after his writings calling the Albanians not to emigrate to Turkey despite the enormous pressure from the Yugoslav authorities during the infamous collection of weapons during 1956/57; after open conversations in "Rilindja" where Demaçi was working at the time, on historical injustices that were done to Albanians after the Second World War, by not allowing the unification of Kosova with Albania, as was decided in the Bujan Conference, and especially after the publication of his novel "Gjarpinjtë e gjakut"(Blood snakes) in 1958, he had become a thorn for the Serbian/Yugoslav authorities. Demaçi, this 22 year old rebel should be prevented to continue the path he had taken. He should be disabled from acting and spreading his irredentist attitudes. And, this could only be done by arresting him. He should, by all means be isolated from the new Albanian intelligentsia that was being developed in the 1950s. Therefore, the 327 final decision by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav Secret Service (UDB) had already been taken: Adem Demaçi should be imprisoned, because only then the authorities would be certain that this dangerous voice would be shut down. Adem Demaçi 's first confinement in 1958 and his sentencing to five years in prison by the District Court in Prishtina, aimed, amongst other things, to serve as a tool of intimidation for other Albanians if they were to continue acting as the young Demaçi did. The title of the novel "Gjarpinjtë e gjakut", even though the topic was the fight against a horrible phenomenon such as blood feuds amongst Albanians, was commented by people in many different ways. Snakes were compared to the authorities whereas the motto of the novel: "Not those who are brave to commit the crimes! But those who are brave to extend the hand of reconciliation!", was commented to suggest that Albanians should not kill each other, but their guns should be directed to Yugoslav occupiers. After Adem Demaçi 's second sentencing to 15 years in prison in 1964, now in the capacity of the leader of the irredentist movement Lëvizja Revolucionare për Bashkimin e Shqiptarëve (Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians), and after the exemplary behavior during the trial before Yugoslav courts, in the District Court of Prishtina, thus defending his 328 opinion and that of the organization led by him that Kosova and other Albanian territories should unite with the mother country - Albania, the Yugoslav authorities had placed a strict embargo against Demaçi's name. 2. It would suffice to mention Demaçi's name as a writer and a patriot, for people to be questioned by the UDB. Many individuals were convicted and dismissed only because it was determined that they have read the novel "Gjarpinjtë e gjakuť'. Even the rare visits paid to Adem Demaçi at his home in Prishtina, following his first and second releases from prison, were only done at night and with extra caution. This was only done by the bravest. People would devise various excuses, and would enter the shops with the pretext of buying something just to avoid meeting Demaçi whenever he was seen in the streets of Prishtina! Sometimes people would move from one side of the street to the other just to avoid being seen by the penetrating eyes of the UDB as meeting with Yugoslavia's number one public enemy. Despite this strict embargo imposed by the authorities against Demaçi's name, his name would be mentioned more often and would become more respectable among the people and especially among the students. His novel "Gjarpinjtë e gjakuť', would be read and copies would be made either by hand 329 or with the help of typewriters. His photos too would be copied and disseminated. In family circles and in Albanian "Odas" in Kosovar villages, Adem Demaçi's name was becoming more respectable, whereas his suffering in Serbian and Yugoslav prisons was being acknowledged, as they were, a sacrifice for the enslaved people of Kosova. Whilst Adem Demaçi's name had become a synonym for the man of endurance and sacrifice, but mentioned mostly in closed and semi- clandestine circles, in the demonstrations of 1968, Adem Demaçi's name would be acclaimed openly and massively by the demonstrators, also requesting his release from the 15 year prison term he was serving at the prison of Pozharevc in Serbia. Whereas in the historical demonstrations of 1981, the name of Adem Demaçi, who was then serving his third prison term of 15 years, was acclaimed in all cities throughout Kosova, and especially in Prishtina, where the most powerful demonstrations of that year were held, with 4 protesters killed, dozens wounded by firearms, and hundreds injured during clashes with Serbian/Yugoslav police and military forces. Adem Demaçi's third prison term of 15 years in 1975 by the District Court in Prishtina, in a typical political trial that was a common practice of totalitarian, dictatorial and communist systems of the time, was aimed at eliminating him from the national political life. In this political trial, where 330 he will be sentenced along with 18 other intellectuals and patriots, also convicted before by Serbian/Yugoslav authorities, the aim was that this time, besides the imprisonment and revenge against Adem Demaçi, the idea and political vision of Demaçi would also be condemned. Therefore, this time the authorities believed that this would result in the final suppression of the Liberation Movement in Kosova. This however would be disproved by the events that would follow soon. Shortly after Demaçi's third court sentence, the doyen of the National Liberation and Unification Movement, Metush Krasniqi would establish the organization National Liberation Movement of Kosova and other Albanian territories in Yugoslavia. 3. After Adem Demaçi's release from third prison term in 1990 after 28 years served in prisons throughout Kosova, Serbia and Yugoslavia, he was returning to Kosova as a living hero. Now his novel "Gjarpinjtë e gjakut" would be republished in 10.000 copies (for which only until recently one could be imprisoned). Songs will be singed about him and poetries written. Thus, Adem Demaçi had become part of our everyday life. Although he would say that "he was released from the small prison and has returned to the biggest prison in the world which is Kosova", however, this time Adem 331 Demaçi would see Kosova in a united front against the Serbian/Yugoslav rule. In the early 90s of the twentieth century, democratic winds were blowing in these parts of the Balkans, even though in Kosova they were not bringing freedom. About 15 political parties were formed in Kosova. A common denominator for all these political parties was the Republic of Kosova. Demaçi was a supporter of all, but would not become a member of any of these parties. Now, one could write and speak openly about Adem Demaçi. The sacrifices and sufferings of Demaçi were being mentioned in newspapers in Kosova, Albania, and throughout the globe. He would give interviews for all radio and TV stations around the world, openly expressing his views on the political situation in Kosova. Adem Demaçi, in these new circumstances, was visiting countries in the Western Europe and USA. He had already become an honored citizen of the world. His words were being acknowledged and appreciated in the democratic societies. He was awarded many Awards and Prizes, amongst others the Saharov Price, by the European Parliament in 1990. 4. Adem Demaçi will continue to have his opinion and position, the Demaçian style. He will continue to speak openly and to express his opinions, without equivoques, and without calculating how 332 he will be regarded by his compatriots and the world. He never spoke and he never speaks with a calculator in his hand. He continues to have only one criteria and measure: to speak and to defend the truth about the freedom for his people. He would often be misunderstood by his compatriots when addressing the Serbian people with "Serbian brothers", even though its leaders had kept him in handcuffs for 28 years. He was not understood even when he mentioned the creation of "Balkania", to include Serbs, Albanians, and Montenegrins, and other Balkan nations afterwards, even though he initially envisioned the creation of the Republic of Kosova as a precondition for the establishment of a new federation or confederation in the region. Demaçi was not understood even when he refused to participate in the Rambouillet Conference in 1999, because he did not want to partake in a Conference where Kosova was not envisioned as a Republic, whereas he was not against others participating in the Conference. As a result of this lack of understanding for Demaçi's political philosophy, some would even say that "Demaçi is against the entire world!". And, why not, Demaçi was against the entire world if full freedom for Kosova would not be secured, for which his people had fought for almost a century and himself for about half a century! Adem Demaçi who had always been different from the others, still was entitled to be different from the others. 333 Albanian people are greatly indebted to Adem Demaçi. This is an eternal debt. Just as it is indebted to the Legendary Commander Adem Jashari for his sacrifice and that of the emblematic family Jashari, it is also indebted to Adem Demaçi for his historic mission and his political-national vision. Award of the Price "Doctor Honiris Causa" to Adem Demaçi by the University of Prishtina; award of the Honor "HERO of Kosova" by the President of the Republic of Kosova, and award of the medal "Honor of the Nation" by the President of Albania in the centennial of the Independence of Albania, are all evidence that Adem Dermaçi deserves to be acknowledged, treated and valued as one of the colossuses of the Albanian nation. 334
