What is a West Indian?
What do other West Indians think is their identity?
Is there a peculiar West Indian identity?
Do I /can I share it?
Being Anglo-Caribbean investigates the identity of a white
Trinidadian
creole
in relation to wider issues of West Indian identity.
The first section recollects aspects of the author s time in Trinidad
and Antigua, together with his experiences of living in England and
revisiting the Caribbean. The second part explores issues arising
from these sometimes fragmentary memories in the context of
West Indian literature and history.
George Parfitt was born in Trinidad but has lived in England
since
1954
and was educated at the University of Bristol. He
spent most of his working life as Lecturer and, later, Reader in
English Literature at the University of Nottingham. He has
published widely, mainly on the seventeenth-century literature
and on First World War poetry and fiction. He is also a published
poet, the father of five children, and now lives in retirement with
his wife in Newark, Nottinghamshire.
