Linguistic and Philological Confluences
Summary
Linguistic and Philological Confluences contains a series of compelling studies,
traditional and modern, which intertwine with patristic translations and with words
spoken from the heart, all having a common denominator, that of paying homage
to Professor Nicolae Felecan, on his turning
70
years old (and counting
47
years of
scientific and didactic activity).
The volume joins together
44
highly esteemed names of specialists, in the
country and abroad, with whom Nicolae Felecan shares a true
collégial
relationship;
he has collaborated with some of the specialists on various projects, and he met
many of them on the occasion of national or international scientific events, or via
specialized publications:

The volume
is divided into
11
thematic chapters, according to the field of
research developed: dialectology, phonetics, grammar, the history of the Romanian
language, journalism, lexicology, Latin language and literature
-
classical philosophy and
culture, Romance linguistics and philology, onomastics, pragmatics, miscellanea. Within each
chapter, the studies have been ordered alphabetically, according to the authors names.
The authors have been listed according to the alphabetical order of the cities /countries
they come from.
582
Summary
Even if there are some quantitative differences between the texts, we consider
that what may have determined each of the contributors to settle on a certain length
of their studies was along the line of the principle of
non multa, sed
multum.
Further on, we suggest a brief presentation of the studies mentioned above.
DIALECTOLOGY
As a result of the research conducted in the Istrian Peninsula, together with
Vasile
Frăţilă,
Gabriel
Bărdăşan
writes a study entitled Inherited Lexical Elements
or Internal Creations of Istro-Romanian? In the shape of a lexicographically well-
documented monograph,
21
alphabetically-ordered terms are presented, with
reference to their grammatical category, meanings, and phonetic variants recorded,
as well as with reference to the two types of etymological solutions suggested,
supporting the hypothesis of the formation of a word either within the dialect or
within the common Romanian language.
In Etymological Contributions (II),
Dumitru Loşonţi
discusses, from an
etymological point of view, a series of words, especially popular and regional ones,
starting with the letter D . Most of these have an unknown etymology, inaccurately
or insufficiently explained in dictionaries so far. Therefore, the author tries to
interpret them correctly, supporting his statements with numerous arguments
(lexical, phonetic, etymological etc.). The conclusion is that important dictionaries
(DLR,
MDA, DEX)
should revise many of their articles, by reconsidering certain
etymologies, by eliminating certain words/variants or by introducing others.
Iulia Mărgărit
researches The
Latinity
Hidden in the Lexis of Romanian
Subdialects to the East of the Bug River, Ukraine, following the tracks of a multi-
disciplinary team led by Anton
Golopenţia,
in
1942-1943.
The peculiarity derives
from the significant separation of the Romanian communities in the area investigated
from their former country, but also from the considerable distance between these
communities. Two words have been approached (team and jisitori), both of Latin
origin, which have equally suffered changes in matters of semantics, and of shape,
respectively.
From a dialectological and sociolinguistic perspective, Nicolae Saramandu
discusses the issues of The Generation of Speakers and Language Changes, and
observes that innovation is perpetuated with a different degree of intensity by speakers
of different ages and according to the nature of the linguistic variable. Therefore, in
the study of linguistic variety and language change, the index of variability generation
of speakers is invalid, as it proves more appropriate to talk about the age index (or
parameter).
A Word Inherited from Latin into the Contemporary
Maramureş Subdialect
offers
Teofil
Teaha the opportunity to extend his research on the lexis taken over from our
Roman ancestors, which has vigorously kept a wide circulation in some subdialects,
thus confirming the existence and, at the same time, the permanence of a linguistic

continuum to the North and to the South of the Danube River. However, the author
does not end his research here, but also makes reference to other dialects from the
Western Romance languages, where there are descendants of the Latin ma(n)sum.
Vasile
Ţâra
is concerned with
Λ
Dialectal Syntactic Phenomenon, regarding the
repetition of the direct and indirect object realized by the short forms of the personal
and reflexive pronouns, repetitions which have been considered either pleonastic
or redundant. The author concludes that the phenomenon in questions translates a
redundant syntactic construction, rather than a pleonastic one, as it is not the result
of a grammatical error: it represents a surplus of communication.
PHONETICS
In his Observations on Metaphonic Diphthongs in Romanian, Fernando
Sánchez Miret
claims that the diphthongization e>ea,o> oa has been studied from
three different points of view; nevertheless, some phonetic aspects of the process
remain unclear. Three types of hypotheses are offered in the attempt to explain
this shift: metaphony, spontaneous diphthongization or metaphony followed by
diphthongization. The author mentions that experimental phonetics may clarify, to
some extent, the real facts involved in this change.
Similar concerns are also conspicuous in Reflections on the Definition of
Diphthongs and the Status of the Semivowels [i] and [u] in Romanian. Vladimir
Zagaevschi presents a controversial and scarcely studied phonetic phenomenon, gives
a critical reading to the definitions provided by specialists so far, only to formulate,
in the end, a definition that should resolve, or at least put aside, hesitation and
equivocation: Two vowel tones uttered within a single syllable is called a diphthong
GRAMMAR
Starting from the premise that Romanian punctuation is rather permissive,
Sergiu Drincu, a Professor from
Timişoara,
discusses The Punctuation of
însă.
Providing several syntactic situations, the author suggests the following rule:
însă
should be placed between commas within a sentence only when it functions as a
concessive adverb. Therefore, placing a conjunctional
însă
inside a sentence between
commas marks a punctuation mistake.
Ştefan Găitănaru
approaches
lhe
Prepositional Object in Old Romanian,
starting from the examples found in the texts of the Chroniclers. The prepositional
object is an actant of the phrase it is part of, depending on the semantic matrix of an
objective referent. Its syntactic position has, with certain mutations that depend on
the norms typical of a given age, the same sphere of representation, at the level of the
clause and of the sentence, as in the contemporary Romanian language.
As a sign of gratitude for his colleague from
Baia Mare
(Nicolae Felecan),
G. G.
Neamţu,
a Professor at The
Babeş-Bolyai
University in Cluj-Napoca, advances
a number of Observations on the Possessive/Genitive Phrases with

Romanian.
The particularly thorough and complex presentation, based on a vast bibliography,

aims to exhaust the subject, whilst being an appeal for the keeping of the traditional
interpretation of
possessives.
Through inflection and through the way in which the
possessor is expressed, the lexemes

from personal pronouns.
THE HISTORY OF THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE
Starting from the monograph made by Nicolae Felecan
(2005),
dedicated to
the terminology related to the parts of the human body, Gheorghe Chivu develops
the subject in the context of the fiction that appeared before the 19th century. The
Terminology Regarding the Parts of the Body in Old Romanian Writings proves that, even
if the words which designate parts of the human body were frequently used in current
speech, having been in the Romanian language for a long time, as most of them were
inherited, they only scarcely appear in the pages of Old Romanian writings.
Marcu
Mihail
Deleanu updates what
Alf
Lombard has observed for decades:
the Romanian language is the least fixed of all Romance languages.
Âandî
in Three
Inscriptions from
Banat,
from
1902
highlights numerous orthoepic and inflectional
variants in use, at the beginning of the past century. The author completes the
linguistic landscape of the era with certain archaic terms, Latinisms, phoneticisms,
regionalisms, so that the letters studied gain in value from the point of view of the
history of the Romanian language.
JOURNALISM
After a heartfelt dedication addressed to Nicolae Felecan, Professor Hie
Rad
offers the living proof of the researcher put in service of the academic community:
The Predecessors of the Romanian Press is based on a minute research and it presents the
history of the publications from the areas inhabited by Romanians. They appear two
centuries later than throughout the rest of Europe, due to certain political, economic,
linguistic etc. obstacles. Mutatis mutandis, their importance for the Romanian culture
is equivalent to the writings of the first Chroniclers, in what concerns the history of
the Romanian language.
LEXICOLOGY
Ana-Maria Botnaru proposes an excursion in the semantic fields of the terms
pădure
and
arbore,
both of Latin origin. Her article is on the borderline between
lexicology and onomastics, as the author tries to achieve a linguistic monograph of the
terminology related
topadme,
forest . Examples include equivalent forms in Romance
or Slavic languages, and the literary contexts refer to the poetry of Mihai Eminescu.

Traian Diaconescu follows, from a historical and comparative perspective, the
structure of sacred discourses and the strategy of argumentation. The author reviews
the rhetorical genres, the divisions of eloquence and the discursive structure of
notable authors of the Antiquity, only to prove, further on, how Christian discourse

creatively took over the structure of profane, pre-Christian discourse, functionally
adjusting the content of the discourse to the nature of the audience.
A chapter from The Terminology of the Human Body in Romanian (Felecan
2005)
inspired
Ionel
Funeriu to delight our readers with Naturalia
non
sunt turpia.
The talent and the craftsmanship of his discourse, the ability to twist the Romanian
language into fascinating puns, generates, when reading, that particular sinful relish
which we get a taste of in the forbidden works of famous writers. The science of
language mingles with gratifying literary quotations, etymologies complete lexical
taboos, the culture of a lifetime is intertwined with personal experiences, old and new.
In Trendy Words in the Contemporary Political-Journalistic Discourse,
Adriana
Stoichiţoiu Ichim
considers a corpus made up of
29
words (from the archaic and
popular sector of the vocabulary, from the familiar and
argotic
registers, and from the
neological lexis). The author s approach starts from the lexicographic information
found in the dictionaries of contemporary Romanian, and it signals certain meanings
that have appeared as discursive facts and that have been imposed in recurring and
stable (con)texts in the post-Revolutionary political journalism. The analysis of the
meanings revealed a series of mutations (at a semantic and a pragmastylistic level),
significant both for the dynamics of the contemporary lexis, and for the semantic-
stylistic strategies of persuasion/manipulation in political communication.
Emil Suciu
-
nowadays the most resourceful researcher in the field of the
Turkish influence on the Romanian language
-
approaches this particular topic with
reference to Transylvania. As opposed to
Şăineanu,
the author proves the existence
of Turkisms in
Ardeal,
some centuries old, as a result of the linguistic contact
between Romanians, Serbs, Hungarians and Turks. Numerous examples support the
assimilation of Turkish words both in the literary language, as in the subdialects in
Ardeal,
either directly, or through Hungarian or Serbian mediators.
Aida

on the author

experience, gained through getting involved in tenure examinations.
The Switch from Direct to Indirect Speech and the Stimulation of Linguistic Creativity
discusses issues that aspects related to grammar, ortography and punctuation pose for
teachers and students alike. Besides signaling them, the study also offers solutions and
suggestions for avoiding typical mistakes, along with presenting complex exercises for
the cultivation of the Romanian language.
Adjectives Referring to the Names of the States of the World comes to further

concerns relative to the language of countries
and their denominations. The study is divided into five chapters, and it offers both
the valid norm of usage, as well as the occurrences available on the Internet. From a
lexicological point of view, the author discusses the suffixes typical of the Romanian
language, those borrowed from the language of origin, whilst also paying attention to
particular situations, such as compound denominations,
homonymie
or synonymous
forms, and the use of adjectives.

Summary
LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, CLASSICAL PHILOSOPHY AND
CULTURE
Classicist Traian Diaconescu pays homage to his colleague not through a
single article, but through three. The Perception of Time in Sophocles Tragedies follows
the category of time in the Greek literary and philosophical tradition. The author s
conclusion is that, in Sophocles tragedy, time reveals itself as a philosophical
category in the manner of Aristotle: it is no longer a cyclical, mythological time, but
a linear and irreversible one, developing complex relations with the tragic hero and
his tragic guilt.
The Concept of Verisimilitude in Latin Rhetoric and Poetics is based on lengthy
quotations from Cicero, Quintilian, Aristotle and so on, who introduce the reader
into the fascinating universe of Antique classicism. The concept of verisimilitude,
taken from the Greeks, has in Latin various synonyms:
verisimilis,
credibilis, probabilis
etc., and the Roman theoreticians distinguished between empirical verisimilitude,
with its probative force, pertaining to the space of rhetoric, and diegetic verisimilitude,
with expressive aspects, belonging to the field of poetics.
Liviu Franga
approaches Collective Lyricism and Its Forms in the Classical
Antiquity. Laic Collective Lyricism with much classicist rigour, based on a complex
bibliography. The author makes, on the one hand, a brief presentation and a functional
classification of Antique collective lyricism
-
focusing on poetic creations tightly
connected to everyday life-, and on the other hand, he insists on the formal nature of
anonymous Latin lyricism, simultaneously profane and sacred.
The Beginnings of Individual Lyricism in Rome. The First Forms of Lyrical and
Cultivated Latin Poetry: Dramatic Lyricism completes the previous study, so that,
put together, the two articles make up a detailed image of Latin lyricism. Mariana
Franga
claims that Latin theatre originates in Etruscan dances, an art of pantomime,
unfolding against a musical background. Dramatized lyricism, be it comic or tragic, is
one of the fundamental sources of the dramatic genre.
Dan Negrescu researches A Way to the Holy Fathers by translating certain
fragments from the work of
Petrus Abaelardus,
Sic et Non.
The task is not an easy one, as
it assumes, besides solid knowledge of Latin (patristics), the thorough comprehension
of sacred texts, of Antique philosophy and culture. These competencies are critical in
the approach of texts written by the Fathers of the Church, as the decoding of word
order in Latin should be correlated with catching the idea, the spirit of the text.
ROMANCE LINGUISTICS AND PHILOLOGY
Iulia Barbus
study could fit into several chapters of the present volume
-
Lexicology, Latin Language and Literature
-,
but it was included here on taking into
account a certain engagement of Romance languages, noticeable throughout the
article. It presents the verbs that illustrate the chatter , the prattle in the lexical-
semantic field of the Latin
verba
dicendi. Starting from the act of uttering a message,
Omagiu Profesorului
^.Atco&íe
ЇТі/ееяп

the author approaches, from a modern perspective, eight Latin verbs, following their
semantic aspects and their dissemination in Neo-Latin languages.
In the study
Fraseologia romena
collegata ai nomi dei mammiferi e le corrispondenti
espressioni in italiano e francese, Alfonso Germani
makes a selection of phrases,
locutions and idiomatic expressions in Romanian, referring to the names of the most
common mammals
(bou
ox ,
cal
horse ,
capră
goat ,
câine dog , vacă
cow etc.),
and their corresponding forms in Italian and French. For the construction of this
inventory, the author used the most well-known dictionaries in the three languages,
bilingual dictionaries, dictionaries of sayings and proverbs, and certain dictionaries
of phrases.
Antonio Mallozzi
s
article,
Alcuni
termini
di parentela nelle lingue romanze e
in alcuni dialetti dell Italia centro-meridionale,
is part of a larger project, dedicated to
the comparison of the vocabulary of the Romanian language and that of the dialects
in meridional Italy. Starting from the observation of words and expressions that are
almost identical in Romanian and in the dialects investigated, the author deals with
some of the concepts denoting kinship, which prove the essential
Latinity
of the
Romanian language.
Based on an intensive field research, Vasile Pavel draws our attention to the
communities of Romanians in the Southeast of Ukraine, in the Caucasus and on
the Asian territory of the former USSR. Fractures of Romanianness in the Vast Slavic
Space initially presents the extent of the research undergone in the East, and then it
underlines the process of denationalization of the Romanian communities, as well as
the phonetic, morphological and lexical characteristics of the Moldavian subdialects,
currently used only by the elderly.
La Roumanie... en Périgord. Les toponymes et patronymes français « La
Roumanie
»
et ses variantes et dérivés: un exemple de nom de lieu et de personne menant
à nombre de confusions
represents a very well-documented study which brings a
French approach to the name
Roumanie/
Romania. Michel
Râteau
discusses, from
a historical,
onomastic
and Romance perspective, the homonymy between certain
French toponyms and the name of the South-Eastern European country.
Starting from the classification of the homonyms suggested by Nicolae
Felecan
(2004:169
ss),
Povi
Skårup
develops the topic and extends partial lexical
homonymy
-
in which words belong to the same part of speech, but only a part of
their paradigms coincide
-
to verbs. By reinforcing the theory on names, put forward
by his Romanian colleague, the Danish Romance specialist supports his arguments
with examples from Old
Occitan
and Medieval Portuguese, whilst also referring to
French and Spanish.
ONOMASTICS
As coordinator of several grants that centre on onomastics, in general,
Oliviu
Felecan focuses on The Anthroponymy of
Maramureş
-
Between Tradition and
Summary
Modernity, and connects the research to
socio-
and psycholinguistic theories. The use
of sociolinguistics in onomastics is meant to reveal the social norms that determine
the anthroponymic behaviour within a given linguistic community, as well as the
symbolic values, the meanings that the linguistic
/
anthroponymic varieties have for
the members of the community.
Hungarian Oikonyms in
Banat
develops Vasile
Frăţilă
s
concern for the names
of places in
Banat.
According to the semantic criterion, these places may be classified
into toponyms referring to nature (autochthonous terms related to landscape, water,
vegetation, fauna, flora etc.), and social and cultural toponyms (oikonyms referring to
faith, religion, some of which derive from ethnonyms, and others being compounds
with the Hungarian var(os) city, stronghold haz(a) house etc.)
Simona
Goicu-Cealmof wanted to celebrate Professor Nicolae Felecan in a
particular way, by discussing The Origin of the Forename Nicolae. Having one of the
most famous saints for its patron, this first name became one of the most widespread
and frequent baptismal names, both with Romanians and with the other European
peoples. The author does not only offer the denominations occurrences and those of
its Romanian derivative forms, but also gives examples of oikonyms or of names of
churches/monasteries that have St. Nicholas as their titular saint.
Professor
Teodor Oancă
focuses his attention, on this occasion, on family
names that originate in common names. Certain relevant conclusions may be drawn
on reading From Dialectal Terms in
Muntenia
to Family Names, according to which the
family names that derive from dialectal terms present characteristics that are typical
of the divisions of
a subdialect,
in spite of the fact that the significant presence of
certain family names in a particular area does not fully cover the territorial dimension
of the
subdialect.
In Old Urbanonymy from
Hunedoara, Mihai Petre
achieves an excursion
through the historical denominations of the microtoponyms from the county of
Hunedoara,
namely from the cities of
Deva, Haţeg, Hunedoara
and
Orăştie.
The
names of certain areas, and especially those of streets, is directly motivated through
the existence of the referent: a building (a castle, a church, a mill etc.), an ethnic
group, the occupations of the inhabitants from that particular area. Structurally
speaking, urbanonyms may have synthetic forms (A
+
D), as well as derivative and
compound ones.
In Urban Toponymy in Cartographic Representations, Adrian Rezeanu fosters
his lifelong concern in the field of urban toponymy. His article is based on the minute
study of certain documents and maps from the 19th century, which reveal a causative
connection between local landmarks and objectives from remote areas. Only by
adopting a diachronic perspective can one explain the etymology/history of certain
contemporary denominations, which cannot be fathomed by the untrained eye.
In Scholarly Sources for the Modernization of the Romanian System of First Names,
Domniţa Tomescu
develops the topic she had previously dealt with in

The process of modernization of the Romanian
onomastics
-
approached from
a sociocultural
perspective
-
has unfolded throughout
three centuries, and it presents some peculiarities, according to the historical context
(the
і8*-2ош
centuries), the geographical space (Transylvania/Muntenia/Moldova),
the literary and the cultural background of the age.
One of the most notable theoreticians in the field on onomastics worldwide,
Willy van Langendonck
-
from the Catholic University of
Leuven,
Belgium
-
has
accepted to contribute to the present volume, with the study entitled Do proper
names have an etymological meaning? The article develops some of the author
s
recent
interests
(2007:
Theory and Typology ofProperNames, Berlin/New York:
De Gruyter),
which focus on the formal structure of proper names, of places or of persons, but also
on virtual names.
PRAGMATICS
Daiana Felecan
s
study refers to one of the types of group discourse, social
dialogue, of whose variants the author chooses to focus on televised debates and press
releases. The contemporary Romanian political election interlocution is increasingly
oriented towards the patterns of impoliteness. From a typological perspective, the
communicative behaviour, developed along the coordinate of linguistic politeness,
could be placed at the intersection of the Romance pattern (a dynamic, communicative,
voluble temperament), with the Balkan one (a type of temperament that combines the
predilection for vagueness, implicitness and uncertainty, and that for an unyielding and
conflicting behaviour)
.
In Considerations on Speech Acts in Regional French,
Sanda Golopenţia
discusses the way in which a series of pragmatic distinctions (such as those regarding
speech acts) do or do not have a correspondent in the minds of speakers. In regional
speech, the speakers attention seems to focus on the naming of perlocutionary acts.
The names of speech acts get to function as metaphors for certain non-verbal acts,
as illustrated in the examples taken from the
Dictionnaire des régionalismes de France,
edited by
Pierre
Rézeau.
Margareta
Manu Magda s
article refers to the study of the organization of
authentic discourse in the contemporary Romanian language. The author examines, from
a pragmatic perspective, a particular type of discourse
-
greeting
/
gratulating, trying
to identify certain cultural and situational variables, involved in the performance of
this expressive linguistic act.
Mihaela Paraschiv approaches the Linguistic Implications of Politeness in the
Latin Letters of Moldavian Rulers from the
i4th-i8th
centuries. Deriving from the
Antique epistolary theory and practice, and answering to the needs of the Medieval
chancellorship practice, the technique of letter writing,
ars
dictaminis, as a linguistic
expression of politeness, becomes the sum of the main rules referring to composition,
language and style, which maybe applied in the official and personal correspondence
of the age, in the European space.

Summary
MISCELLANEA
Adrian Arsinevici, one of the most prolific translators from Danish, exposes
in Reading, Translating (and Editing) Fear and Trembling, some of the difficulties
of translating from Danish into Romanian. Rendering into Romanian the work
of an existentialist philosopher from the 19th century, an ardent investigator of the
human condition
-
Kierkegaard
-,
is not an easy task, but one that implies a thorough
preliminary research, so that the whole semantic charge of certain aesthetic, ethical
and religious concepts could be fully grasped.
Although a technical nature,
Lazăr Avram
lays down Seven Thoughts, straight
from the heart, for a man of heart. The special relationship the author shares with the
person celebrated within this volume, is reflected in every paragraph, which is why
we considered
Lazăr Avram s
thoughts to be the most appropriate ones to end this
reverential volume.
To conclude, we would like to thank all those who have accepted our invitation
to contribute to the achievement of the present volume, in hope that these pages will
bring joy to the person they are dedicated to, and that they prove their use in the field
of linguistics and philology2.
At the same time, we salute Professor NICOLAE FELECAN, on the occasion
of his 70th birthday, with our warmest and heartiest kind regards, and wish him MANY
HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY!
