Personality of Czech historian

Graus
and his role
in the history of Czechoslovak post-war historiography,
there are topics for which general consensus on the histo¬
ric community is difficult. The size of his meaning is per¬
haps evident. One admires him for his scientific quality and
European level, the others condemnate him for his authorita¬
tive position in the historical science in the fifties. Perhaps
this dichotomy is the main reason that he has not yet been
sufficiently reflected by modern Czech historiography. His
masterpieces are more known abroad than in this country,
they were not even translated into Czech. It seems like the
„young
Graus
closed a virtual gate to the „temple of Czech
history in front of the „old
Graus .
But gateway cannot remain
closed forever. Graus s magnum opus is an important part of
modern European historiography. It is an inspiring theme in
methodology. It transcends the narrow confines of medieval
studies and speaks in matter of history, capturing the possi¬
bility of historical fact, the possibility of interpreting the past
It was certainly a mistake, that our historical science twenty
years pretended that there is no
Graus.
One can understand

given the circumstances in which it during the seventies and
eighties was found. How to explain, however, that a certain
silence and ignorance still exist? This text is an attempt to
capture the available sources on the life and work of
František
Graus
and also an attempt by one of the possible approaches
to this link. I m not entitled to the general acceptance of my
views, although I intend to defend it. I would however like to
provoke a further discussion about the heritage of
František
Graus
and Czech postwar historiography at all.
