A monographic study The educational and caring activity of the Congregation of the
Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent
de Paul
in Lublin in the 19th and 2&h centuries is
a publication devoted to the history of the order and its activity towards orphaned and
abandoned children during the two centuries in Lublin. The subject of the undertaken
studies was to present the educational and caring achievements of the Daughters of Charity
against the background of historical and political transformations as well as three different
epochs: the partitions, the twenty years between the world wars and the times after World
War II.
The Congregation of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent
de Paul
called the
Daughters of Charity (from the French word
charité
-
charity) was established in France
in
1633
and was officially acknowledged by Pope Clement IX in
1668.
The Congregation
was brought to the Republic of Poland in
1652
by Queen Maria Louise
de Gonzaga,
with
the first hospital and central house set up in Warsaw. The founder of the congregation was
Father Vincent
de Paul
(1581-1660),
an eminent figure in the history of the Church. The
Congregation actively developed his evangelistic and charitable work among the sick, the
poor, orphans, old people and the disabled. The cofounder of the new congregation was
a later saint, Louise
de
Marillac. The Daughters of Charity became a large monastic institu¬
tion and since the 19th century it has still been the most numerous female order in the world,
organized in an innovative and universal way. The charisma of the Congregation is the service
for Christ in hospitals, nursing homes and orphanages, health care centers, special education¬
al institutions and schools. Now this charisma also includes also teaching religion and doing
charity work in the area of the parish. In the past the Daughters of Charity were concerned
with taking care of the soldiers injured during the wars, sick prisoners and galley slaves. They
used to run soup kitchens for the poor, shelter houses and nurseries for children.
After it was brought to the Polish lands, the order started developing its activity. In the
second half of the 18th century it owned

houses. By
1800
the Daughters of Charity ran
totally

institutions, comprising hospitals
(23),
including those joined with orphanages
(10)
or schools
(12).
In Lublin the first hospital of the Congregation of the Daughters of
Charity of Saint Vincent
de Paul
was established in
1730.
At the end of the 18th century

sisters worked there, who took under protection and brought up a few orphaned
chil-

Till Poland lost its independence in
1795,
the Congregation was organized in one
province with the seat in Warsaw. In the 19th century it split up into four: Warsaw,
Poznań
(now
Chełmno-Poznań),
Galicia
(now Cracow) and non-existent Lithuanian ones. The
caring and educational activity aimed at orphaned and abandoned children was one of the
charismas of the Congregation. The oldest forms of care included running hospitals (which
had the function of nursing homes till the 19th c), homes for foundlings and orphanages.
The number of orphaned children grew in times of wars and natural disasters. After World
War I there were about
150,000
orphans whose parents were missing or had died dur¬
ing the warfare, and about
1 500 000
semi-orphans. After World War II there were about
4
million abandoned children in Poland, including over
halfa
million full orphans. Social,
charitable and church organizations provided support and care to all those children.
Institutions run by this congregation in Lublin had rich historical traditions included
in the caring trend towards children, youth and those in need. The first specialist caring
and educational institution was the Orphan Room established in
1855
by the Lublin Char¬
itable Society and still working now as a children s home. The second one was a charitable
institution of the so-called House of Profit established by the Russian authorities in
1897.
It is in that House that the Daughters of Charity ran different kinds of caring activity sup¬
porting the poor inhabitants of Lublin. There, a big orphanage for boys and girls found its
place, too. In the period between the world wars the House of Profit was transformed by
the sisters into an orphanage for boys only. It functioned till
1947,
when the sisters gave
up running it. After
137
years of devoted work for the benefit of those most in need, the
Lublin Charitable Society was liquidated in
1952
by the communist authorities. Further
charity work was unacceptable for the authorities for ideological reasons. Clericalism of
the society and its close cooperation with monastic orders was emphasized, which created
the possibilities of the Society being used for the purposes contrary to the new atheist
ideology and the interests of the peoples state. Liquidation of the Lublin Charitable Society
preceded removing monastic orders from the caring institutions. In
1953
the Daughters of
Charity were separated from the work with children within the Educational Institution of
the Orphan Room . The third charity institution functioning in Lublin under the Women s
Association of Saint Vincent
de Paul
was the Charity House, since
1921
run by the Daugh¬
ters of Charity. It helped the poorest inhabitants of the city (soup rooms, sewing workshops
for unemployed women). In September
1939
the sisters spontaneously called into being an
orphanage for girls who were orphaned by the murdered inhabitants of Lublin and who
lost their families as a result of Nazi bombings. The place was an orphanage till
1952.
Then
the communist authorities allowed for the caring and educational activity of the sisters
only towards mentally disabled children .The Daughters of Charity always adjusted their
educational system to different epochs in which their institutions functioned and to the
binding legal and caring systems. The order maintained a permanent Catholic, religious
and patriotic model worked out in the course of ages. It was a model for all institutions of
the Daughters of Charity. It is a composing element of the evolution of the caring activity
for the children in Poland, including the Lublin district.
