I d never been up in a plane, but I wanted to be a pilot.
He accepted the last Japanese surrender of WWII on June
30, 1951.
It was too late to get out, so they told us to dig in.
Just no wonder people go crazy.
There were plenty of bullets; it was like a nightmare.
There were Japanese soldiers still holding out up in the hills.
It looked like the end of the world, and it seemed that way.
Pioneer aviator climbed to the top of everything he did.
I can still see the droves of people standing by the train.
You could see the fires for miles and miles.
Birmingham native led McGehee s Killers in Europe.
I thought I would be dead by then, but I rallied.
Although never shot at, he was anxious to come home.
His direct hit on a Japanese ship earned the Navy Cross citation.
He prepared troops for possible chemical warfare.
A long train ride and a little crying finally got him into the Navy.
They went after our carriers with kamikaze attacks.
He took a bullet to the chest; he was lucky to survive.
It was hard for an

or 19-year-old to handle.
