Summary
Archaeological excavations were carried out on the site of Newbridge Quarry, near Pickering. A Neolithic presence,
as indicated by a hazelnut cache, and Bronze Age activity with putative post-built structures were noted. Most
features, however, were associated with an earlier Iron Age open settlement and a later Iron Age and Romano-
British landscape comprising a trackway, appended enclosures and fields. The site expanded rapidly in the later
Iron Age and early Roman period, with a focus of activity in the
2nd
century. A later Roman presence is also
indicated, in particular cremation and inhumation burials, although habitation during this period may have been
outside the excavated area.
