SUMMARY
By the end of the Second World War, the once flourishing
Jewish community of Slovakia shrunk by two thirds when
compared to its prewar numbers. This was the result of
the so-called Final Solution, a Nazi attempt to exterminate
European Jewry. Though undoubtedly a Nazi Germany
plan, the Slovak government played an active role in the
Holocaust by handing Germany its Jews. Thus, when it
comes to reflecting on the Holocaust, Slovakia has reasons
to confront its past. So far, however, rather than to reflect
on the country s totalitarian history, Slovakia tries to forget
crimes against its own Jews. On this topic, the historian
Tony Judt concisely pointed out that a nation has first to
have remembered something before it can begin to forget,
advocating thereby professional study of history as an
instrument of recall.666 In this respect, the aim of my book
is to reflect on the Holocaust by studying an aspect of the

wartime history that has been so far largely overlooked
-
the
mood and attitude of Slovak society towards the persecution
of Jews.
Although I am mostly concerned with public responses
to anti-Semitism, I agree with David
Bankier
that these
responses cannot be studied in isolation from its attitudes
to the regime s policies in general. 667 In other words, though
the focus of my book are public responses to the Jewish
question, I study these in a larger sociopolitical context. As
for terminology, I agree with historians
-

Steinert,
Ian Kershaw and Peter
Longerich,
among others
-
that
the term public opinion may work for democratic systems,
but has significant shortcomings when used in totalitarian
systems. Hence, in my work, I prefer the concept of mood
and attitude, which in the words of
Mariis
Steinert has
the advantage of incorporating both the emotional,
spontaneous, often short-lived opinion and the lasting frame
of mind determined by character, education, and experience,
representing the actual starting point of all assessments and
expressions of opinions. 668
Acknowledging the difficulties that are necessarily con¬
nected with any research on public responses, my research
aim has been to collect archival materials from as many diffe¬
rent sources as possible. Consequently, though my research
is primarily based on the examination of situational reports
from local authorities in Slovakia, I have also studied state
propaganda materials, eye-witness reports, and others.
Formally, my book is divided into five chapters. The first
chapter has a twofold aim. First, to analyze and define anti-

and as a case study of Slovakia in
the period between the construction of Slovak national
identity and the end of the Second World War. Second,
to
reinvestigate
the link between anti-Semitism and the
tragedy of the Holocaust in Slovakia. It is not without
doubt that anti-Semitism is the single most important
element in analyzing the road to Auschwitz
-
twisted or
direct. 669 Hence, before analyzing the public responses to
anti-Semitism I found it important to understand what
links and what sets apart anti-Semitism as a phenomena
and the Holocaust as a historical event. The first chapter
thus offers an important theoretical and historical context
for the subsequent parts of my book.
The next three chapters are a chronologic analysis of
mood and opinion of the Slovak population during three
phases of the regime. In the second chapter I deal with the
period from October
1938
until July
1940,
that is, from
the period when Slovakia was granted autonomy until
the Slovak-German talks in Salzburg. In the third chapter
I analyze reactions of the majority in a four-year period
confined by the Salzburg talks and the Slovak national
uprising. In the fourth chapter I am concerned with public
mood and opinion in the last phase of the existence of
the Slovak republic, during the German occupation of the
country following the Slovak National Uprising.
As I have already mentioned, I investigated public
responses to official anti-Semitism in a larger sociopolitical
context of domestic and international events. Hence, as my
study shows, during the initial phase, the regime enjoyed
the rather strong loyalty among the population. This can

be explained by, first, the relative political stability and,
second, by the massive propaganda that promised to feed
the Slovak people with the property and social position
of Jews and other groups, such as the Czechs, who were
in large part forced out of the country. Speaking about
propaganda, the first two years of the regime can also be
seen as a period of searching for an internal and external
enemy. This was a process aimed not only against the
Jewish and Czech minorities, but also at Slovak society
itself. By stirring the prejudices rooted in the society, the
Slovak government aimed to construct a more coherent
society. As my investigation shows, when it comes to the
persecution of Jews, the policies aimed at Jewish economic
rights were largely welcomed. The first recorded displays
of repeated public discontent with the persecution of Jews
can be traced back to the
1942
deportations. However, by
autumn of that year
-
when more than
57
thousand Jews
were deported from Slovakia
-
district authorities observed
that the public ceased to discuss the Jewish question. In
my opinion, this silence cannot be explained solely by the
physical removal of the Jews or by the question of guilt.
What also played a role was the public dissatisfaction with
the results of aryanization and the growing disbelief in the
German victory. The German occupation of Slovakia, that
started in August
1944,
on one hand stimulated part of the
population in their effort to quickly enrich themselves at
the expense of the Jews but it also, for the first time on
a larger scale, activated public efforts to save Jews from the
second wave of deportations.
Overall, however, I believe that the relative ease with
which the Holocaust in Slovakia was carried out had been
facilitated by general ignorance to the fate of Jews
-
and
not their property. Hence, the last chapter investigates the
factor of public interest in the Jewish property as a way of

creating a mood of indifference. I study this issue on several
levels
-
on the example of aryanization and liquidation of
Jewish businesses, auctions that followed the deportations
of Jews, but also on the individual level of pleas for Jewish
belongings.
