He left an extensive output of compositions, and also worked over a long period of time as a music teacher and writer on music. For many years he lived in Hamburg (1893- 1903) and Vienna (1903-1918), before returning permanently to Prague after World War I. During the ¡nterwar period he was recognized as an important representative of cultural life in Czechoslovakia, serving for example as President of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts from 1931 to 1939. The largest set of source materials for knowledge of Foerster s life and work is administered by the Czech Museum of Music (as part of the National Museum). The foundation of the museum s collection consists of materials from the composer s estate, most importantly autograph manuscripts of the majority of his musical works. The principal content of the present publication is a new inventory of Foerster s compositions, based on detailed study of musical manuscripts and prints from the collections of the Czech Museum of Music which has made it possible to augment and correct the previous list published more than sixty years ago. The basic chronological inventory is supplemented by inventories according to genres and opus numbers, with an alphabetical index, and the various inventories are interconnected via a system of references. The accompanying study discusses musical manuscripts of special importance and summarizes the main problems pertaining to the cataloguing of Foerster s works.
