On Winding Roads of Self-Knowledge and Knowledge of the Other
(Czechs and Slovaks in Bulgaria, Bulgarians in the Czech Republic)
The book includes
13
studies devoted to the issue of Czechs and Slo¬
vaks on the Bulgarian territory and the Bulgarian presence in the
Czech Republic. In it, its author, Bulgarian
folkbrist,
ethnographer
and Bohemian studies scholar Vladimir
Penčev,
presents the results
of his research on the given sphere lasting for over three decades. Al¬
though some
Penčev's
partial studies were translated into Czech and
Slovak in the past years already, this monograph constitutes the so
far most systematic and comprehensive interpretation of his views
on the presented issues available to Czech and Slovak readers.
Using the example of the above groups {Bulgarians, Czechs and
Slovaks) within the mentioned countries {Bulgaria and the Czech Re¬
public) that create a linchpin of the individual chapters, a constant
winding through the entire publication, the author concentrates on
a wide array of traditional as well as latest phenomena and processes.
He examines the questions of transformations of identity and histor¬
ical conditions of its forms, pays attention to the issue of migrations,
their motivations and course. Using specific examples, he analyses
assimilation processes and the advancement of integration of minor¬
ity communities into the framework of a wider society, also devoting
a large space to the general description of ethnic contacts. Neither
does he ignore the examination of such classical spheres as folk¬
lore. The author's approach differs from that used by many young¬
er researchers, especially those with the anthropological professional
background, by his deep knowledge of the history of the countries un¬
der observation that provides his analyses with firm and solid foun¬
dations. The presented typology of analysed social formations as well
as staging of the described processes excel in a concise approach.
All the individual studies have one, transversal general issue: the
question of otherness of human communities, the possibilities of its
communication, the ways of its depiction and analyses or, in other

words, of its knowledge. As a result, knowledge constitutes the em¬
blematic notion of the whole publication whose individual chapters
can also be read as examples or, rather, parables by means of which
the author proves (and offers for sharing in a very smooth form to
readers) his conviction that the road to learn oneself leads through
the knowledge of the other/others. This humanistic perspective is
something extraordinary, which elevates an academic monograph to
the level of a publication that addresses and delights not only the
reader's intellect, but also the reader himself.
