15th YEARS OF EDUCATION IN THE FIELD OF MECHATRONICS
AT THE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
OF THE SILESIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
The monograph combines features of a methodical guide in the field of engineering
education with study summarizing achievements in the framework of academic staff
development and research activity related to mechatronics at the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. In “Introductions” there are put
together requirements necessary for rise and consequent development of academic
staff embracing new interdyscyplinary areas of engineering knowledge and,
in particular, mechatronics.
Origin of educational concept in the field of mechatronics on the basis of
electromechanics (it means, the new trend and fraction which has differed from
hitherto existing) against the background of various enterprises undertaken during last
decade of the XX century in the world and in Poland was presented in the chapter 1. In
this chapter all the essential dates, events, enterprises and actions associated with
establishing autonomous educational and research group in mechatronics at the
Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the SUT (which are finally crowned by foundation
of the Chair of Mechatronics in 2005) are listed and put together in chronological
order.
In the chapter 2 development of academic staff was described, doctoral theses
(chapter 2.2) and habilitation theses (chapter 2.3) were pointed out and their influence
upon development of curricula in the field of mechatronics was considered in details
one after the other. The chapter 3 was devoted to presentation of scientific and
research activity carried out with the help of grants (allocated by the Committee of
Scientific Research and the Scientific Board of the Ministry of Science and Higher
Education) and orders from Polish and foreign industrial companies. In the chapter 3.4

significance and importance of these research grants for constant modification and
modernization of educational issues were underlined in very distinctive way.
Gradual, systematic and consequent development of curricula in the framework of
Electrical Engineering course, Electronics course and, finally, completely autonomous
Mechatronics course was characterized in the two consecutive chapters 4 and 5. From
viewpoint of methodical guide on mechatronics crucial role plays chapter 5 in which
program assumptions and curricula for B.Sc. and M.Sc courses were described in
detailed way. In a further part of this chapter own original didactic concepts and
educational experiences related to realization and assessment of laboratory and design
work (being in accordance with “Problem-Based Learning” Methodology) were
widely presented. The chapter 5.5 focuses on Diploma seminars and diploma theses
which play crucial and key role in integrating acquired technical knowledge, as well
as, in developing and widening communication skills. Experiences resulting from
carrying on Diploma seminars and obligatory rules for realization of diploma theses
were concerned in details and described. The chapter 5.6 is dedicated to diploma
engineering examination during which student has to confirm that he/she is familiar
with oral and written communication skills in relation to: wide range of technical
problems included in electrical engineering, electronics, mechanics, automatic control
and robotics, as well as, in relation to: physical phenomena and technological
processes; mathematical methods of their analysis and synthesis; construction and
performance of different complex integrated devices and mechatronics systems. The
chapter 5.7 includes brief summarization in which it was emphasized that between
1997-2012 about 50 new topics (subjects) were elaborated and implemented in
curricula.
In the chapter 6 there are collected interviews and presentations associated with
promoting mechatronics in Polish community with special focus on the trend and
fraction which results directly from electromechanics. In supplement I there are
presented achievements in academic staff development related to the all professors
employed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Mining and
Geology which act as figure-heads in Mechatronics course. In the Supplement II there
are put together family names of whole involved academic staff and names of
institutes and chairs at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Automatic
Control, Electronics and Informatics and Faculty of Mining and Geology of the SUT
which are engaged in lecturing and carrying out laboratory works for mechatronics
students.
