Numerous members of that branch of the
Piast
dynasty, descendants of
Konrad I Mazowiecki,
reigned over Masovia from the
half of the 13th century (the beginning of the rule of Siemowit I) to
1526
(death
of
Janusz
III) including such distinguished rulers as Siemowit III Trojdenowic,
his sons
Janusz
I and Siemowit IV, his great grandson Boleslaus IV, as well as
the sons of Boleslaus IV:
Konrad
III Rudy and
Janusz
II. Some of the dukes of
Masovia were the candidates for the throne of Poland, e.g. Siemowit IV and
Boleslaus IV A significant role in contacts with
Ruthenia
and Silesia of the
Piast
dynasty was also played by the daughters of the dukes of Masovia who
married those dynasts. Ergo dukes of Masovia were related to the dynasties
of Gediminids,
Přemyslid,
Habsburg,
Roman,
Wettin
and Griffins. By way of
illustration, Cymburgis performed such a special role among the daughters
of the Piasts of Masovia (the daughter of Siemowit IV), for she was the mother
of emperor
Frideric
III of the
Albertině
line of the
Habsburg
dynasty. Whereas
Ann (the daughter of duke Wenceslaus), who married Henry V of Iron, was
the mother of
Hedwig
of
Żagań,
the last wife of
Casimir
the Great.
The
Piast
dynasty of Masovia has been arousing the interest of Polish histo¬
riography for a long time, nonetheless, the studies to date have not exhausted
the above-mentioned problem. The following work addresses the key topics
concerning the
Piast
dynasty of Masovia including the political history of that
district from the 13th century to the incorporation into the Crown in
1526.
The
work comprises three chapters presenting the results of the research over
three distinct research areas.
The first chapter discusses the political history of Masovia in the years
1248-1526
against the socio-political changes occurring in that district. The
relations, vital for that stage of the treatise, of dukes of Masovia with their
neighbours, notably Lithuania (especially in the 13th and 14th centuries), the
Czech (king Wenceslaus II of the
Přemyslid
dynasty and John and Charles
of the House of Luxembourg),
Ruthenia
of Halych and Volodymyr, and the
Teutonic Order in Prussia, have been put forward. Additionally, the relations
between dukes of Masovia and the Kingdom of Poland, particularly an issue
of the incorporation of Masovia in
1352,
have been thoroughly presented. The
author depicted as well the issues raising the problem of the protective reign
over the underage dukes exercised in Masovia, most often by their mothers
after the rulers death, but also by the brothers and grandmothers. Regency
was exercised on behalf of the underage descendants in the period of the fe¬
alty of Masovia to the Crown. However, the interference of the Polish king as
a liege lord (suzerain) was only restricted to the control over the manner and
duration of the protective reign. The protector was chosen by the council of
dukes who with the regent ruled in the district. The second problem of the
great importance discussed in the first part of the treatise refers to the issues of

the political division of Masovia. Despite the findings reported by Adam Wolff,
we are still faced with the inaccurate terminology pertaining to the divisions of
Masovia in numerous publications, both scientific and popular and scientific.
This especially concerns the 15th century during which the above-mentioned
district underwent its greatest fragmentation. Therefore, the issues of the di¬
visions of the Western Masovia in
1434
and the Eastern Masovia in
1471
have
been thoroughly discussed. After the death of the last member of the
Piast
dy¬
nasty of Western Masovia
(Włodzisław
II), lands of
Rawa, Gostynin
and
Bełz
were incorporated into the Crown, while the land of
Sochaczew
was given to
the widow of
Włodzisław
II: Ann of
Oleśnica.
In
1476
king
Casimir
Jagiellon
incorporated the land of
Sochaczew
into the Crown, handing over
Koło
with
its territory to Ann. In
1471
sons of Boleslaus IV
(Konrad
III
Rudy, Casimir
III,
Boleslaus V and
Janusz
II) divided the patrimony.
Konrad
III received lands of
Czersk
and
Liw;
Casimir
III
-
lands of
Płock, Wizna, Wyszogród
and Zawkrze;
Boleslaus
V
-
lands of Warsaw,
Nur
and
Zakroczym;
while
Janusz
II
-
lands of
Ciechanów, Łomża,
and
Maków
and
Różan.
In the years of
1474-1488
subse¬
quent parts of the district were divided. Thus in
1474
Konrad
III acquired the
district of
Wyszogród,
and in
1484
the land of
Zakroczym,
while
Janusz
II the
lands of
Płock,
Wizna and Zawkrze. In
1488
Konrad
received lands of Warsaw
and
Nur,
whereas
Janusz
II the land of
Wyszogród,
earlier belonging to his
older brother. In
1495
(after death of
Janusz II) Konrad III Rudy
acquired lands
of
Ciechanów, Łomża, Różan, and Wyszogród,
while king John I Albert incor¬
porated lands of
Płock,
Wizna and Zawkrze to the Crown. In
1496
John I Albert
and
Konrad
III reached a compromise, in compliance with which in
1497
the
duke of Masovia paid a liege homage to the Polish king of the lands he received
as fief
dorn. In 1511
Anna
Radziwiłł
(the widow of
Konrad
III) with the king
Sigismund s consent took the land of Wizna out of pledge. Until
1526
the as¬
sets of the dukes of Masovia remained the same. In
1524
Stanislaus (the older
son of
Konrad
III) died, while in March
1526
Janusz
III, the last member of the
Piast
dynasty of Masovia. The same month in defiance of the fiefdom rights the
sister of the latter Ann assumed the rule, which lasted from March to August
1526.
After the arrival of king
Sigismund
I to Warsaw and the solemn funeral
of
Janusz
III the duchy of Masovia was incorporated into the Crown.
The second chapter raises the issues of diplomatics and political history of
Masovia, since it concerns a detailed analysis of the intitulation, particularly
the title of the duke. The aforementioned chapter examines the titles of the
dukes and duchesses of Masovia from the half of the 13th century to
1526
and
discusses the relations between the order of the titles appearing in the intitu¬
lation of the documents and the order of the officials on the list of witnesses,
especially in reference to the dignitaries of high rank. The titles of the dukes
of Masovia and
Płock
in the documents and seals of the Polish kings (14lh-18 h
centuries) serve as a separate subject of the analysis. The intitulation of the
dukes of Masovia comprises the names of drawers in nominative (preceded
by a personal pronoun, conjunction or adverb), a patronymic, a devotional
formula (Dei
gracia),
titles and dignities (dux, ducissa,
princeps, dominus, domina,
heres), terms denoting seniority (senior, junior, iuvenis), epithets referring to the
rule exercised over a particular territory (totius, gubernatrix, tutrix, tenutrix),
as well terms applying to filiation (genitrix). In the
Piast
dynasty of Masovia
a criterion referring to the name was not used, however, the oldest sons
were frequently named after the late grandfather. Moreover, a predilection for

certain names most often used was perceived, e.g. Boleslaus and Siemowit.
When it comes to the female representatives of the
Piast
dynasty the most
popular names included Ann and Euphemia. Very rarely do we encounter two
names dukes of Masovia bore, for only Siemowit V Alexander and Stanislaus
Siemowit (the son of Siemowit III by the second marriage) carried two names.
None of the dukes of Masovia used ordinal numbers in the intitulation and
seal titles, while Siemowit III, Siemowit V and
Włodzisław
II used patronymics.
It was not until the integration of Masovia by Boleslaus II Siemowitowic that
the formula dux tocius Mazovie became the intitulation of
sensu
largo, with ref¬
erence to ducal Masovia. Nonetheless, the division into three districts after the
death of Boleslaus II contributed to the fragmentation of the ducal intitulation.
From the half of the 14th century particular intitulation was shaped by the origi¬
nal names of places, former castellan s castles, or the towns performing the
roles of residences of the rulers. Therefore, we encounter the following intitu¬
lation of the dukes of Masovia in the documents of the half of the 14th century:
dukes of
Czersk, Rawa,
Warsaw,
Ciechanów, Gostynin
and
Sochaczew.
With
reference to the numerous territorial divisions of Masovia and its fragmenta¬
tion (especially in the 15th century), we meet thirty various particular names in
the Masovian documents from the half of the 13th century to
1526
aside from
the intitulation pertaining to the so-called all-Mazovia and
Ruthenian
titles:
the titles of
Bełz, Błonie, Brześć, Ciechanów, Czersk, Gostynin, Grabowiec,
Grójec, Horodło, Koło, Kujawy, Liw, Lubaczów, Łopatyn, Mszczonów, Nur,
Płock, Płońsk, Raciąż, Rawa, Sieciechów, Sochaczew, Sokal,
Warsaw,
Warka,
Wizna, Wyszogród, Zakroczym, Zawkrze and Żydaczów.
Between
1383
(with
some intervals) and
1526
we come across
a Ruthenian
title in the documents of
the dukes of Masovia. The above-mentioned
Ruthenian
title in the chancellery
of Siemowit IV should not be linked to the land of
Bełz
Polish king granted
him, but to the II Convention of
Sieradz
(June
1383)
during which the duke
was spectacularly nominated the king of Kingdom of Poland by his followers.
Furthermore, there is every likelihood that he gave a promise to reclaim the
lost lands, including Red
Ruthenia,
and incorporate them to the Crown. Hence
as the candidate for the throne of the Kingdom of Poland he made a decision
to introduce the
Ruthenian
titles to the intitulation of the drawn documents,
thereby referring to the
Ruthenian
title used by his uncle Boleslaus
Jerzy
of
Masovia and king
Casimir
the Great
-
representatives of the same
Piast
dynas¬
ty. It was an act of political propaganda which was to facilitate the assumption
of the Polish throne by Siemowit IV. Additionally, the titles emphasized the
rights of the dukes of Masovia to the lands temporarily divided, the example
being the land of Wizna. After
1462
claim intitulation was to be noticed in the
documents of the sons of Boleslaus IV of the lands of
Rawa, Sochaczew
and
Gostynin.
In
1462-1476
the above-mentioned lands were incorporated to the
Kingdom of Poland. When analysing the intitulation and the list of witnesses
in the ducal documents (provided with the fully developed form) we can state
that there was a dependence of the order of the particular titles in the intitula¬
tion and the order of the officials placed on the list of witnesses, especially in
regard to the dignitaries of high rank. Precedence claimed over the ducal titles
in the chancellery of Siemowit III, and subsequently his sons Siemowit IV and
Janusz
I, was in force in Masovia also in the period of the fragmentation of
the district. In the later period the same procedure was applied in respect of
the documents of Boleslaus IV, who single-handedly ruled over the district of

(1429).
In turn, it is somewhat
difficult to analyse the titles and its relation to the precedence of the officials
assembled on the list of witnesses for the period of
1471-1495,
during which
there were initially four independent duchies, later three, since the same of¬
ficials appeared not only in the documents of their own rulers.
The third part of the aforementioned treatise focuses upon the genealogy
of the dukes of Masovia. It comprises supplements, editions and discussions
in the margin of
Rodowód Piastów mazowieckich
(The Lineage of the
Piast
Dynasty
of Masovia) of
Kazimierz Jasiński.
The above-mentioned chapter includes the
introduction, in which the state of research (particularly the most recent works
written after
1997),
the academic achievements of
Kazimierz Jasiński
on the
genealogy of the
Piast
dynasty of Masovia, as well as the source material of
the treatise under discussion. While examining the source basis of the geneal¬
ogy of the
Piast
dynasty of Masovia not only did the author of the following
work include the source material collected by
Jasiński,
but also conducted the
archival and library research, which enabled him to discover the documents
and manuscripts not known for the author of
Rodowód.
Liber mortuorum of the
monastery in
Czerwińsk,
in which the entries concerning deaths of the dukes
and duchesses of Masovia have been preserved, appears to be immensely
valuable, for it extends our knowledge on the dates of deaths, among others
of Agafia, the wife of
Konrad I Mazowiecki,
Boleslaus I, Siemowit IV,
Danuté
of Lithuania, the wife of
Janusz
I, as well as delivers the information on the
unknown so far Stanislaus Siemowit, the son of Siemowit III Trojdenowic. In
the third chapter various issues regarding onomastics and funerary topics, as
well the issues linked to the marriages of the dukes and duchesses of Masovia
and representations of the
Piast
dynasty in the opinion of the contemporaries
have been put forward.
To the end of the treatise six annexes are featured. The first source annex
comprises the edition of various documents and manuscripts in most cases un¬
published, or published without the critical scientific apparatus. They include,
inter alia, documents referring to the territorial divisions, the setting and guar¬
antee of dowry, and diplomas regarding various legal acts of dukes, among
other things, privileges and confirmations of the documents for the towns of
Masovia (especially Warsaw), knightly properties, etc. The next two annexes
appertain to the intitulation of dukes:
