That the
placebo
effect plays a role In many treatments
is abundantly clear,

not only plays a complementary
role in various treatments, but it Is sometimes the only
benefit of treatment Brain Imaging studies over the
past decade have shewn that placebo-treated patients
undergo some of the same changes in brain activity as
those treated with pharmacologically active substances.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
WALTER A. BROWN, MD, is Clinical Professor of
Psychiatry at Brown University (Providence, Rl) and
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School
of Medicine (Boston, MA). Dr. Brown s basic and clinical
research in psychopharmacology prompted his interest
in the placebo effect His research on the placebo effect
spans more than
25
years and he is widely regarded
as an authority on the subject. He has authored or co-
authored more than
130
peer-reviewed papers, more
than
30
of which have been academic papers on the
placebo effect.
