Summary
The character of power is unchangeable and the only thing that changes is in fact its
form
-
or in Foucault s terminology technique
-
which gradually becomes less and less
transparent. Concerning the effective institutionalized influence applied to the mutual
relationship or relation between the economic and cultural capital (in the meaning
used by Bourdieau), we can analyze it even before the general copying and subsequent
expansion of effectively introduced Roman Empire bureaucratic apparatus principles
in the context of state-organized political units of the medieval Europe. Even more it
could be said about their establishment within the early modern monarchies but, above
all, under the functional mechanisms of modern democratic regimes or their repressive
counterparts providing multilevel, institutionalized and intentional interference and
guidance of the individual s emotions, thoughts and attitudes.
Studying some current definitions of propaganda, we will consider the misleading
concept of this timeless phenomenon as a simplified but widespread description of the
practice of effectively organized communities. It concerns the theoretical perspective
determined by today s most frequent
-
non-totalitarian
-
propaganda (the source of
illusion of absence of propaganda mechanisms in neo-liberal, post-industrial social
systems), in other words, the identification of propaganda only with totalitarian state
systems. Nevertheless, the limited concept of propaganda restricted to an open and
declarative, ideologically persuasive rhetoric is not only misleading but also very
convenient because it deprives us of the responsibility for critical evaluation of hidden
manipulative techniques which we are personally exposed to. Our historical experience
based on the fifty-year existence of totalitarian regime led us to the identification of
the term propaganda with its Marxist, or Leninist conception. But it openly declares
propaganda as a necessary instrument of (the Communist) party ideological influence
focused on political consciousness of the people. The so-called Western conception of
propaganda is predominated by the sociological interpretation of the phenomenon. For
example, the French sociologist Jacques Ellul has been critically reflecting the existing
studies on propaganda since the 1960 s and rejects both the prevailing psychological
interpretations and the generalizations based on statistics or on the so-called scientific
experiments with small groups of volunteers exposed to laboratory conditions.
Propaganda
-
usually performed as an institutionalized spread of ideological
truths using all possible forms of persuasion
-
could be classified as so-called white
propaganda that does not exceed certain ethical rules; and black propaganda for
which the end fully justifies any means and the true content is thus not a criterion for
the created propaganda communication. Weakness of this classification can be seen
well from the fact that the so-called white propaganda could use techniques providing
emotional communication which largely prevents the adequate interpretation of their
sense, but also the recognition of the appropriate meaning.
The phenomenon of propaganda has been the topic of many academic studies,
either from the point of view of history, sociology, philosophy, linguistics, psychology,
economics, political science; or the so-called postdisciplinary cultural or media studies.
The proposed monograph has an ambition to enrich the current methodology primarily
with its interdisciplinary perspective providing several advantages
-
it mainly concerns
time and methodology diversity of understanding and analysis of specific forms and
consequences of propaganda activities. Thanks to this approach, some direct forms of
propaganda with more or less varied hidden (indirect) forms can be confronted, and
last but not least this attitude also enables us to refer to time context determination and
other features of persuasive pressure.
First of the four monograph sections (Theoretical reflection of propaganda) presents
individual and partial views to propaganda as a theoretical concept reflected from the
perspective of particular humanities. The second (Propaganda and nationalism) and
third (Propaganda between collectivism and individualism) sections will offer different
analyses of specific historically determined manifestations of persuasive power tool use
characterized from national, or totalitarian point of view. The last section (Propaganda
and media discourse) is focused on the mass media which shape the typical and probably
the most frequent discourse of modern propaganda activities. This is the way the book
gathers various studies whose main objective is to inspire new questions and tasks in
wide academic debate covering the current, highly relevant topic.
