I he storę՜ is one ot considerable diversity, but it also reveals many common themes which inllueneed the practice of law at the highest let el in different times and places. Го an extent which mav surprise many readers, supreme courts in Hurope, particularly in the pre-Napoleonic era, grappled with mant ol the problems ot multifarious nationalities, languages, traditions and jurisdictions which are familiar challenges for lawyers working within the international supreme and supranational courts we know tódat. European Supreme Courts: Λ Portrait through History is organised into 23 chapters w ritten by leading experts in their fields. Ihe first part of the book examines supreme courts by political and geographical jurisdiction trom the medienai period to the modern day. Ihe Hrench revolutionary and Napoleonic era marked a dramatic watershed in the history of Huropean supreme courts, to be followed by the rise ot nationalism and the nation state. Many (but not all) nation-states henceforth developed more inward-looking and closed legal systems on national constitutional foundations. Ibis nationalistic approach persisted until the totalitarian disasters of the 20th centui՜)· began to raise new questions about the individual nation-slate model, and propelled the notion of supra-national justice based on concepts of universal human rights, and laws enshrining universal legal principles, onto centre stage. Ihe second part of the hook examines these developments in the context of the emergence and continuing growth of supra-national courts, notably the Huropean Court of I tuman Rights in Strasbourg and the Court of Justice of
the Huropean Union in l.uxembourg.
