Understanding Sam Shepard investigates the noto¬
riously complex and confusing dramatic world
of Sam Shepard, one of America s most prolific,
thoughtful, and challenging contemporary play¬
wrights. During his nearly fifty years as a writer,
actor, director, and producer, Shepard has consis¬
tently focused his work on the ever-changing Ameri¬
can cultural landscape, from its obsessions with
rock n roll and the mythic West to the realities of
class consciousness and broken families. James A.
Crank s comprehensive study of Shepard offers
scholars and students of the dramatist a means of
understanding Shephard s frequent experimentation
with language, setting, characters, and theme.
Beginning with a brief biography of Shepard,
( rank shows how experiences in Shepard s life even¬
tually resonate in his work by exploring the major
themes, unique style, and history of Shepard s pro¬
ductions from the
1960s
to present day. Focusing
first on Shepard s early plays, which showcase
highly experimental, frenetic explorations of frac¬
tured worlds, Crank discusses how the techniques
from these works evolve and translate into the
major works in the family trilogy : Curse o/ the
Starving Class, the Pulitzer Prize—winning Buried
Child, and True West. Shepard often uses elements
from his past

his relationship with his father, his
struggle for control within the family, and the break¬
down of the suburban American dream

as major
starting points in his plays. In the family trilogy
plays, Shepard explores family conflict through
the vantage points of such issues as femininity,
masculinity, sexuality, and class. The volume con¬
cludes with an examination of Shepard s more
recent works and the connection between Shepard s
plays and his careers as a screenwriter and an actor.
