el pleacă la drum înarmat cu toate ustensilele necesare „cercetă¬
torului , specialistului, în spatele „omului de ştiinţă îl ghicim pe
„omul de literatură , cel ce se bucură în primul rând de frumuseţea
poetică a mirurilor cercetate. O sensibilitate de „poet , mai
curând decât a unui om de ştiinţă! De altfel, nu lipseşte o anumită
detaşare: comentariile nu sunt făcute nici pe departe cu încrânce¬
narea, cu „seriozitatea specifică specialistului. La acelaşi episod
din basm, de pildă, Andrei Oişteanu vine cu două interpretări
diferite. Care dintre ele este mai aproape de „adevăr , autorul
nu pare prea interesat să afle. Amândouă rămân ipotetice pentru
că, notează eseistul, „adevărata,
orìgine a
basmului fiind deosebit
de ascunsă şi alunecoasă, orice interpretare îşi păstrează caracterul
de probabilitate, devenind cu greu o certitudine ...

cea de-a
doua secţiune a cărţii, ne propune un mic dicţionar-eseu (formu¬
larea îi aparţine chiar autoruluO al cărui scop este în primul
rând acela de a jalona „tendinţa omului de a asocia unele
animale fabuloase propriilor sale concepte morale, filozofice şi
religioase . Reţinem plăcerea cu care autorul „dicţionarului
trece în revistă făpturi care nu există, de fapt născociri poetice
de primă mărime, relevând extraordinara putere de a imagina a
omului, din cele mai îndepărtate timpuri. De fapt, Andrei Oişteanu
porneşte

întregul său demers ni se pare a se înscrie perfect în
acest perimetru
—
în căutarea omului poetic pe care reuşeşte să-1
găsească până şi în cele mai străvechi producţii ale imaginaţiei.

of the most brilliant names in the field of our national culture
dealt with this domain, from one prospect or another, affective
or erudite, scientific or poetic, archivistic or analytic, many areas
have remained un-explored and uncommented upon, especial!

mythology point of view. In the last few years this domain seems
to have begun to arouse a particular interest especially among the
young researchers, and that is a double satisfaction.

Oişteanu s
book represents, without doubt, the certain
guarantee of some indispensable qualities for the study of
mythology: firmness in controlling an ample bibliography, asso¬
ciative esprit and fervency of dissociations, coherence in demon¬
stration and a certain founding of the intuition on cultural and
scientific arguments.

starts from some theoretical observations
on the sacred-profane relation in the myth elaboration, the
allegorical codification of the original Event, the alteration and
progressive desacralization, in time, more of the formal aspect
than of the original mental nucleus and the way in which a
tribal myth may become fairy-tale for another community.

Propp s opinion, according to which the initiation
ritual constitutes the oldest basis of the fairy-tale, the work tries
and succeeds in detecting in the Romanian fairy-tale
„Harap
Alb three „initiations, respectively three symbolical deaths and
resurrections to which the hero is submitted, three different
levels of initiation, each superior to the previous one .
The initiation tests to which the hero is submitted are:
1)
to
obtain the salad from the Bear s garden Cwhere the animal
totemism, the sacred libation and the exorcising dance are
detected);
2)
to hunt the
mirific
stag (an alchemic ritual of
initiation, the sun between the horns representing the image of
the „philosopher s mercury , the homeopathic transference of
the forces; on the other hand the hunting episode can be allied
to the myths based on the idea of cyclical death and revival of
the nature); and
3)
to ask in marriage the Red Emperor s
daughter (the hierogamy with the indispensable tests and the
communion with the Sun s daughter), the conclusion being „the
origin of this chapter of the fairy-tale are myths and rituals of
initiation belonging to different cults as we can recognize in the
Addenda:

tests to which the hero is submitted, elements from mythical-
-ritual scenarios of shamanic and yoga initiation, from the
religions of mysteries, from the cult of Zamolxis etc., elements
which have not appeared simultaneously but which were adopted
in the fairy-tale during a long journey in space and time .
The syncretism of the fairy-tale also generates the alluvial of
mythical and initiation elements which are taken by the analysis.
Along the commentaries of three types of initiation the author
refers to the ritual of hunting; the homeopathic relations mask-
-person, ancestors (the emperor)
—
initiators-neophytes; the
garden motif;
Edenic
island; sacred pantheon; rituals of fertility,
shamanic ecstasy and sanguineous-mythraic solarity,- the phyto-
-minerai symbolism and the alchemic mysteries; the contribution
of the demoniac in starting the revelation; the symbolism of the
fatal or energy starting look; dendrolatry; haemobolic ceremo¬
nies, etc. etc. Each motif is projected against the background of
the universal mythical thought and is applied in a symbolic
texture whose edges rest on the two poles: the profane and the
sacred, this world and the world beyond, which spatialize the
initiation travel to the Center which represents the self cognition
by progressive cognition. The second section of the book entitled
„Zoosophia ,
having as subtitle „Commentaries of zoo-mythology
is a „dictionary-essay having in view „man s tendency to associate
to some fabulous animals his own moral, philosophic and
religious concepts , portraying and analyzing here imaginary
animals like the Basilisk (the malefic look, the scenarios orga¬
nized around the motif by which
Harap Alb
can be associated
to Perseus and the
Meduse
to the
Mirific
Stag), the Asp (symbol
of the Devil in Romanian literature, having in view the process
of transformation of the murderous forces into benevolent-
-protecting virtues), the Phoenix (treated synthetically, as a
paradigm of the spiral evolution in the
pre-
and post-Christianized
world), the Simorgh, the Roq bird, the Golden Eagle, the Mermaids
(models of the temptation and of the trap which first attracts
and then destroys), the Gorgons and Harpies, the Calandrinon
bird, the Salamander and, of course, the Unicorn whose nobility
oscillates between kindness and cruelty.

From the point of view of compared mythology the approaching
of the fairy-tale
„Harap Alb ,
offers a multitude of suggestions,
linking the hero of the Romanian fairy-tale to a series of mythical
personalities CPsyche, Ulysses, Heracles, Jason, Rama, Theseus,
Siegfried), or gods whose existence has been imagined in order
to represent the Revival idea CDyonisus, Osiris, Attis, Jesus).
Beyond the syncretism of the ritual motifs and elements, the
firy-tale
„Harap Alb
—
in its evolution
—
presents an advantage
which is very important for the specialist in anthropology, as
the fairy-tale is based on archaic-pagan layers, whose Christian
contamination constitutes an exceptional spiritual marriage.
Elements like ritual hunting, animal totemism, dendrolatry, the
World Beyond, etc., alongside the sufferings theme, the taming
and self purification, deciphering of the sacred in one owns
sphere and by freeing from the original sin linked with the
Resurrection, represent all together a spiritual complex of abso¬
lute originality.
The Garden of the World Beyond is a remarkable „visiting
card and we like to think it represents only the beginning of
an analytic system in archetypology which, without doubt, is
fully deserved by Romanian mythology.
