1812 —
a pivotal year in the history of
Bugeac and Transdanubian settlers .
In the first paragraphs of the book, the authors examine aspects of
political and ethno-demographic history of Bugeac from the first centuries
AD and to the Bucharest Peace Treaty signed on May
16/28,1812.
The political history of the region attests that its geographic location
led to a constant struggle for Bugeac. It was the objective not only of the
powers rushing across the Danube into the Balkans but also for Byzantium
and Bulgaria that opposed them. The Italian republics Genoa and Venice
also penetrated here founding their merchant centres in the northern Black
Sea region. For this reason, regardless of changes in the political situation
of Bugeac, its population always were ethnically mixed.
This refers to the second half of the 14th
—
first half of the 15th century
when the Golden Horde domination in Bugeac was replaced by the authority
of the Moldovan state. Then in
1484,
in part, and since
1538,
entirely, this
territory became part of the Ottoman Empire. Despite the forceful extrusion
of the Tatar population from Bugeac by the Moldavian rulers, it did not
succeed completely. The Moldavians neither had enough time to develop
this area demographically. The transfer of this region by the Ottomans to the
Crimean Khanate and the settling of the Nogai-Tatar hordes did not deprive
Bugeac of its multiethnic appearance. Besides the nomadic and semi-
nomadic population, in the IS 1

centuries, here lived Moldavians,
Wallachians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Chitaks (orthodox Turks), Russian Old
Believers, Malorossians,
Ruthenians,
Armenians, Jews, some Italians,
Catholics of different origins and, of course, Turks.
The history of Bugeac after the Bucharest Peace Treaty is only considered
in the context of the history of Transdanubian settlers, also known as
Bessarabian Bulgarians and Gagauzians. It was after the period after the
Russian-Turkish war of
1806—1812
when the massive settlement in the
governments lands in Bugeac, owned by the Russian Empire, began. The
economic and demographic development of Bugeac was also performed
by German colonists, Moldavians, Russian peasants, Malorossians, Danube
Cossack Host, Jews, Gypsies.

The book deals with such aspects of the history of the Bugeac/Bessarabian
Bulgarians and Gagauzians as their
socio-legal
order, socio-economic status,
ethnic, linguistic and ethno-cultural identity:
1)
until
1917
as part of Russia;
2) 1918—1940
and
1941—1944 —
in the royal and
profascist
Romania;
3)
in
1940—1941
and
1944—1991 —
in the USSR;
4)
after
1991
as part of the independent states of Moldova and Ukraine.
The facts and arguments presented in this book convince us that:
•
in
1812,
the state that won the war, got Bugeac ( old Bessarabia) as
the land belonged directly to the Ottoman Empire;
•
settling of the Transdanubia settlers in the capacity of colonists
in the territory of Bugeac intended specially for them, concession of the
autonomous rights, allotments and preferences provided relative economic
prosperity, population growth, preservation of native languages, traditions,
rituals, customs of the Bulgarians and Gagauzians;
•
it was Bugeac were the immigrants from Bulgarian lands, speakers
of the Turkic language, got a real opportunity for compact living, and this
concentration determined the evolution of their linguistic and ethnic identity,
leading thus to the self-awareness as speakers of the Gagauzian language;
•
since
1918,
the history of the Bulgarians and Gagauzians in Bugeac
is full of political, ideological and geopolitical transformations, demographic
crises, socio-economic
ups
and downs, threats to their ethnic, linguistic and
ethno-cultural identity. All these are explained by the two World Wars, the
Romanian occupation of Bessarabia, emigration, migration and years of
hunger, repression and persecution;
•
the collapse of the Soviet Union led to the dismemberment of the
Bulgarian and Gagauzian communities between Moldova and Ukraine as
well as to the emergence of new risks to their identity.
