the Center of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners at Nicolas Copernicus
University of
Toruń
celebrated its
lo 1
anniversary,
lhe
collective volume prepared for this occasion
is dedicated to the theory and practice of teaching Polish as a Foreign Language
(PFL).
It is in fact
a natural continuation of an interesting discussion which started during the National Conference
on New Perspectives in Teaching
PFL
organized by our Center in March of
2010.
Our guests,
professors at different Polish Language Teaching centers all over the world, have also accepted
our invitation to share their reflections and experiences in this publication.
The papers included in this volume concern both general methodological issues and specific
practical problems connected with teaching
PFL.
Some of the authors also present their new
original teaching aids and solutions, namely special computer programs designed for learning
different language skills.
The volume starts with a chapter entitled Language Skills Revisited, centered around the
methodology of teaching and the role of each particular skill (writing and reading comprehension,
phonetics/speaking, grammar) in the language acquisition process.
The second chapter, dealing with Missing Pieces in Teaching Grammar, concerns some
important inflectional and syntactic problems, such as the use of invariable nouns, complicated
word order issues, etc., which seem to be absent from or at least neglected in the teaching process.
The next part presents The Teacher as an Intercultural Interpreter. Papers included in this
section concentrate on the difficult and complex role of the teacher whose task may not be limited
to teaching language structures and must highlight some basic communication schemes which
differ across cultures.
The chapter entitled Efficient and Interesting Teaching Methods: Practical Solutions includes
six different proposals of original teaching curricula, computer aids and other alternative methods
designed to make the learning process more pleasant and effective.
The volume ends with a chapter entitled Polish Language Teaching

What Comes Next?
The article describing the organization and future perspectives of the Polish department at the
University in Bratislava is actually a good starting point for a broader discussion on the goals,
Possibilities and perspectives of teaching Polish as a Foreign Language across the world.
