Conclusion
The last two decades of the twentieth century can be regarded as a special period in
Central and Eastern Europe. That is because they brought about political, economic
and social changes on an unprecedented scale. These transformations led to the col¬
lapse of the post-Yalta political order in Europe and became one of the key elements
taking apart the Cold War division of the world. The period of
1989-1991
was an
undeniable turning point that ended the twentieth century from the political point
of view. These years were both a clear barrier and a kind of bridge linking different
eras in human history. The new political and social reality taking form particularly
in our region had its genesis in the processes that occurred in the
1980s.
So it is
impossible to provide a clear answer to the question about the revolutionary or evo¬
lutionary character of the transformations in post-communist countries. Undoubtedly
they combined both these elements. We believe that the rapid changes from the turn
of the last two decades of the last century would not have been possible without
the erosion of the communist system visible from the inside. Of course, it did not
concern to the same extent all the countries of the Eastern bloc. There were some
differences between the clearly repressive and totalitarian system in East Germany
or Romania and the authoritarian and farcical system in Poland and Hungary. The
establishment of the "Solidarity" trade union explicitly exposed the weakness of
the communism not only in Poland but also throughout the region. This was proved,
inter alia, by "nervous" reactions of authorities in the neighbouring countries, with
the Soviet Union at the forefront. It became clear to the communist power apparatus
that only the fear of Soviet power was able to ensure its further existence. When the
barrier of fear disappeared, the fate of the communism in Europe was determined.
But the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the transformations that have begun
did not end the problems of the region. Instantly there appeared a question about
the direction, scope and methods of transformation. Initially, the geopolitical situ¬
ation of this part of Europe also became unclear. The societies of the Baltic-Black
Sea Intermarum had to decide independently about their future for the first time
in decades. It was not easy, as the sudden political polarization as well as the lack
of understanding of the market mechanisms and principles of democracy caused

in some countries, including Poland, political and economic "turbulences" on
an unprecedented scale, which had not been known to the enslaved nations so far.
Even now, from the perspective of almost two decades, it is difficult to evaluate
explicitly the changes that have occurred. This study is also an example of this.
Therefore, it should be concluded that we are still far from the final settlement of
the communism and the period of system transformation. Both these problems
still arouse too many emotions in us. Moreover, the multi-faceted character of
the issues brought up by the authors raises new questions and opens new research
threads. |
