Summary:For quality of reproductions and thoroughness of research, it would be difficult to surpass this volume of the Hermitage{u2019}s complete collection catalogues. Also remarkable is the level of virtuosity of the paintings even those by less well-known artists. Two-page spreads and many details facilitate study of the works. The author builds on the research published in her 1994 catalogue by correcting some attributions and dates, adding information on sitters, tracing some provenances farther back, and publishing some paintings for the first time. Technical analysis for some works dates paintings more precisely, for example, from the wood of painted panels. Among the 303 paintings catalogued there are many that are not on continuous display, and the previous edition of the collection catalogues had one third fewer paintings. This catalogue thus gives readers a more comprehensive sense of the collection that has before been possible. In her introduction the author explains how these works show the development of Italian Renaissance painting. She also notes how, when and by whom the collection was built from Peter the Great's acquisition of a painting by Garofalo to the Hermitage{u2019}s recent acquisitions. -- Summary written by John W.
