Resume
Coming to the end of the topic, the February strike of
1989
of the Trepca
coalminers was an event of a great importance for the contemporary
historiography of Kosovo. Its role was felt in many fields, especially in the
internal plan, which led to the organization of the political, social, and
humanitarian life, which with the beginning of the forgiveness of the feuds
,
led to the national homogeneity among the Albanians in Kosovo. While in
the external plan, it made the issue of the Albanians as a majority in Kosovo
to be in the centre of attention of the international opinion, even though it
was difficult for the prestige of Yugoslavia to be devaluated, since its image
as an "uncommitted" country was highly known, which was keeping a
"balance" between Americans and Soviets
,
even though the collapse of the
communist regime in Yugoslavia would be a good possibility for the
democracy to triumph for the people of Yugoslavia. Here, it was clearly
seen that the strike of the Trepca coalminers had a political character, where
from the ten presented requests, two were the most important:
1.
the
protection of the constitution of
1974
and
2.
the Kosovo problem to be
discussed in UN. This strike had significance because it impacted on the
political processes in general. Looking at the
historiographie
and
publicistic
literature and not willing to exaggerate anything at all, I have come to a
conclusion that this strike didn't have the power to sway the base of the
former socialist Yugoslavia, taking into consideration the military and
economic power owned by this country at the time. But, this strike made
vivid the weaknesses in the internal political organization of the
Yugoslavian country, where its prestige inside and outside the country
weakened and got unmasked morally and politically. Based on the
publicistic
writings, which ones sometimes go beyond the limits of its real
evaluation, Considering it as a leader in the changes in the Eastern Europe.
In fact, the first movements againsts the communism were the uprisings in

1956,
Czechoslovakia in
1968,
always remembering all the
intellectuals who criticized the communist regime in the east. Here, we
have come to a conclusion that neither the protests of
1988,
nor the
coalminers' strike of
1989
were movements for the destruction of the
communist or Yugoslavia, but they were movements against the
discriminating politics that was practiced in Kosovo for decades, in the all
aspects, therefore the political prospective at the time was absurd to rely on
the fruits of the socialist revolution of the nations and nationalities of
Yugoslavia. When I mention the solidarity of the scientific and cultural
institutions with the coalminers, I haven't forgotten the other organizations
and enterprises of the time, which supported the coalminers.
Combining archival,
historiographie
and
publicistic
literature such as
Archive State Agency of Kosovo,
historiographie
literature and the press of
the time such as: "Rilindja",
"Zeri i
Rinise", "Kosovarja",
"Bota e re",
then
the outside press such as:
"Zeri i
popullit" and ATA (Albanian Telegraphic
Agency)
,
then the Serbian press of Kosovo such as the newspaper
"Jedinstvo"
and the newspaper "The Politics of Belgrade"
,
which were in
service of the Serbian nationalism. Different from the others, the Republic of
Slovenia and Croatia were supporting the strike of the
1300
coalminers who
were inside the mine, both officially and morally. The Kosovo press but also
the foreign press was full of articles about the 8-day strike of the Trepca
coalminers, which lasted from 20-28th February
1989.
In the conclusion of
this book, I declare with a full responsibility that I was a fortunate and
respected man for having the possibility to elaborate some of the important
points of this event in my book, referring to different writings, and in this
case I felt that my city of Mitrovica, which is a mining and industrial city,
was a significant and stimulant factor for the processes with the objective of
protecting the constitutionality and the basic human, civil and national rights
in Kosovo.
