You Strengthen Peace!
The Women's Movement in the Czech Lands in
1945-1955
The purpose of the present work is to outline changes of the form and content
of the women's organizations in the Czech lands in
1945—1955
with a special emphasis
on their gradual transformation under the communist regime. It was by means of these
organizations that the phenomenon of women's movement as one of significant features
of modern society was realized in the given period, although the usage of the term itself
is problematic with regard to the period after February
1948.
The women's organizations
are examined on the basis of several main indicators: process and conditions of formation
of the individual organizations, proclaimed aims, actual activities, organizational structure,
membership, contacts to international women's organizations and, after February
1948,
mutual relationship with the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia
(KSČ).
These issues
are placed into a wider context in the first chapter dealing with women's movement in the
Czech lands from the 19th century to the Second World War. The last part of the book
is dedicated to portrayals of the "new" socialist woman, which represent post-February
changes at a symbolic level.
In terms of methodology, comparison of selected factors in various periods is pre¬
dominant. The overall structure of the text, its division into identical subchapters, con¬
forms to this approach. The employed methodology also includes the category of gender,
which refers to the construed and extrinsic, and thus changeable in time and space, form
of femininity and masculinity. The book is based particularly on archive materials of varied
provenience, but contemporaneous periodicals and publications are precious sources as
well.
In
1945—1955,
the structure of women's organizations was not steady, there existed
four chronologically subsequent institutions:
Rada československých
%ęn
(1945-1948),
Rada
■fyn
(1948-1950),
Československý svalen
(1950-1952)
and Výbor íeskoslovenských %n
of only
eighty members
(1952-1967).
In addition, there existed the so-called committees of wom¬
en
(výbory
^eri)
-
dependent bodies, almost nonfunctional in real life, artificially incorpo¬
rated into local authorities
(místní národní výbory).
After coming to power, the
KSČ
did not
have a clear idea of treating the tradition of women's movement, which is reflected, among
other things, in the frequent changes in the women's organizations in a short period of
time. Although the
KSČ
attempted to unify and monopolize the women's organizations as
early as in
1948,
they were only gradually employed in reinforcing Communist ideas and
doctrines in practice. Under the communist regime, some elements from previous times
persisted, but they were gradually eliminated. On the other hand, the ideas of socialism,
collectivism as well as the systematic endeavor to involve women in work outside their
households on a large scale were present in the
Rada československých %en
already before
1948.
Gender stereotypes, persisting and thriving despite the
KSČ's
claims of their elimina¬
tion, were also permanent.
The influence of the
KSČ
on the nature of the women's organizations was substantial
after February
1948.
In this period, the vast majority of decision-making processes with re¬
gard to the women's organizations was not only approved, but also initiated by the Central
Committee of the Communist Party
(ÚVKSČ).
The interconnection was institutional as
well as personal. The women's organizations concentrated particularly on the involvement

of women in the building of the socialist Czechoslovakia and on the politico-educational
activities indoctrinating women with fundamental communist ideas and values. The impor¬
tance of the issue of equal position of women in post-February society gradually faded
away as opposed to the previous claims.
However, the events of February
1948
had impact not only on the structure and
goals of the women's organizations, but also on the whole society of that time, not least
at a symbolic level. The
KSČ,
in accordance with its ideology, ascribed to women a specific
social role, which did not correspond with the previous tradition. The "new" socialist
woman had several essential attributes and was expected to carry out clearly defined tasks
and goals; her image is reflected in three fundamental emblematic forms
-
mother, worker,
citizen. The stress on these aspects of women's life reveals the opportunist and pragmatic
approach of the
KSČ
towards women rather than advancement of the Marxist-Leninist
ideals; their massive promotion in public space was intended to confirm the transforma¬
tion of society initiated in February
1948.
The construction of these images of the "new"
socialist woman also shows the gender-determined nature of the power tendencies of the
KSČ.
