Cognitive
Consistency
A Fundamental Principle
in Social Cognition
edited by
Bertram Gawronski
Fritz
Strack
For many years, the notion of cognitive
consistency was mainly associated with semi¬
nal research on dissonance-related attitude
change. Yet the original goal of consistency
theories was much more ambitious: to pro¬
vide a unifying framework for understanding
human thought. Over the last decade, inves¬
tigators have rediscovered the significance
of cognitive consistency as a general prin¬
ciple
ofinformation
processing. This volume
showcases compelling recent research that
addresses the pivotal role of consistency in
multiple aspects of social cognition.
Bertram Gawronski and Fritz
Strack
have
brought together leading authorities to
present key findings, emerging themes, and
current directions in the field. The book
begins with an introductory overview by the
editors. Subsequent sections examine the
operation of consistency principles in several
research areas:
•
Mental representation.
•
Processing fluency and motivational fit.
•
Implicit social cognition.
•
Thinking and reasoning.
•
Decision making and choice.
•
Interpersonal processes.
Coverage ranges from micro-level analyses
of neuropsychological processes and the rela¬
tion between consistency and consciousness
to macro-level investigations of perceptions
of social justice and the development of
continued on back flap
continued from front flap
social groups. Each chapter summarizes
what is known; clearly explains innovative
theories; and identifies important questions
for future research.
Given the significance of consistency prin¬
ciples for virtually all areas of social and
cognitive psychology, this book will be read
with interest by any scholar concerned with
the cognitive underpinnings of social be¬
havior. It is a unique supplemental text for
graduate-level courses in social cognition.
