bert. For years the diversity of the piece has fired the audiences imagination, delighted
and inspired them, and captured their attention. It is sung by the greatest singers aiming
at innovative interpretations and new ways of influencing the audiences aesthetic
experience.
The publication commences with Schubert s short biography, a list of his vocal-instru¬
mental works and an outline of the history of the evolution of solo song. In Chapter Two
the Author compares different Polish translations of the songs
-
poems by
Wilhelm
Müller
-both poetic as well
asthose
adapted to the music. This is followed by a detailed
analysis of the lyrics and musk in each part of the cycle. The Author emphasizes the
interdependence of various elements of the structure of individual songs, and the
intertwining of the vocal and instrumental parts, and devotes much attention to execu¬
tion-related problems. On the basis of his reflections and experience he provides sugges¬
tions how to find and convey significant poetic messages. The final chapter is devoted to
the recordings of Die
schöne Müllerin
and includes a chronological list of

recordings
as well as their durations. More space is devoted to a recording by
Krzysztof Szmyt
and
Katarzyna Jankowska
thatprovided inspiration for this book.
The intention of the Author is to reach to young musicians, apprentice vocalists and
pianists, in the belief that his suggestions and hints related to Schubert s cycle Die
schöne
Müllerin
can be helpful in their work on interpretation of any other piece of vocal-instru¬
mental music.
