Introduction
In
1808
the German geographer August Zoine has issued his book Gea.
Versuch einer wissenschaftlichen Erdbeschreibung .
There, he proposes
one of the European peninsulas to be named Balkan peninsula . So, since
then, for more than
200
years this notion is a subject of very different
interpretations. Unfortunately, in the public conscious of many social layers
in Western Europe and USA, the Balkans are the The gunpowder field of
Europe , The European cultural suburb , The backyard of Europe . The
notions Balkans , Balkanizm became appellative and pay the role of
paradigm when different problems are discussed. Balkans is perceived
not only like geographical identity, but as a social and cultural identity.
The derivative notion of Balkans is the word balkanization , commonly
used in political geography and the geopolitics, as a process establishing
new states with problematical viability. Our basic thesis is oriented to the
idea that the multinational space of the South-East Europe must be observed
through the point of view of the wide spectrum of the European historical
development.
The Balkan Region is very specific geospace, which political-space and
cultural-historical features are quite different. No doubt, in the conditions
of dynamic socio-economic changes and redesign of the cultural-political
space, which are comparable only with the end of the First and Second world
wars, the political geography and the cultural-geographical researches are
much needed. Such need is very sensible for the states from the Balkan
region. The specifics and the features of the cultural-political processes
which are facing the region, part of which is our own state, demonstrate at
greater scale the role of the geographical factor. Here, we need to make the
obligatory clarification, that in the territorial shapes of the Balkan region is
included not only the Balkan peninsula, which is observed as a part of the
natural-geographical area, but here we include the national territories of the
states
-
Turkey, Romania and the Island of Cyprus. The wider geographical
range and the concrete regional-political thematic of the research gives us
the opportunity to be more precise in scientifically and practical point of
view. These are the analyses, the systematization and the generalization of
the complicated
socio-cultural
and the geopolitical processes, which are
shaping the Balkan civilization-geographical space.

The book Regional and political geography of the Balkan states is
a systematic geographical work, which aims to review and analyses the
complicated interconnections between the historical-geographical, natural-
ecological, cultural-political and socio-economic systems, which appears
in the Balkan region. On its base lays down the fundamental idea, that the
geography is united and overall natural-human science, which is connected
with History, Philosophy, Ecology, Political Studies, Economics, Sociology,
Law and etc. However, unless the traditional (classical) geographical
methods and approaches, the current research is following the civilization
approach, which is considered as a modern and very complex in the
contemporary geographical science. This gives significant innovative view
of the current work.
The monograph Regional and political geography of the Balkan states
consists of two separate parts
-
General and Regional. The first part, review
in logical sequence the essence and the significance of the regional and
political geography and the formation of the contemporary Balkan political
map. In addition, there are analyses of the specific features of the political
and cultural
-
civilization space of the Balkan states, the conflict geopolitical
zones in the context of the Cyprus problem and the issues in Bosnia and
Herzegovina. However, the analysis of the Balkan states natural-resource
potential takes place. The second part, consists of complex geographical
analysis of each Balkan state (including Turkey, Cyprus and Kosovo),
which algorithm takes into consideration the geographical space, society
and policy, economy, regions and cities.
The current book is consisted with educational program of the specialty
Geography at Sofia University St.
Kliment Ohridski ,
at the lecturer
course Regional social and economic geography of the Balkan states .
It can be used by the student s studying Political sciences; the specialty
European studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, the specialty International
relations at the Faculty of Law, as well the students at the Faculty of History.
At the same time it is aimed to a wider range of readers, having scientific,
public or professional interest to the complicated problems of the Balkan
states. The target group includes the Bulgarian political and economic
elite
-
politicians, lawyers, economists and businessmen s.
ThefirstandthesecondpartarewrittenbyProf.PhDStefanKarastoyanov,
the third part is jointly written by Prof. PhD Stefan Karastoyanov and Chief
Assist. Prof. PhD Nikolay Popov, the fourth part III is written by Chief
