In autumn 2011 the Historical Museum of the City of
Kraków
for the
sixth time invites you to its branch in
Nowa Huta
to see a new exhi¬
bition from the Forgotten Heritage of
Nowa Huta
series. This time
it will be the history of
Krzesławice,
a village near
Kraków.
Thanks
to its specific position in a narrow belt of land between the steelwork
factory and residential settlements, it remains a unique relict of old
landscape in the middle of the city.
Archaeological discoveries date the beginnings of the village as far
back as early Neolithic period (around
5,500
вс).
In written docu¬
ments
Krzesławice
appeared for the first time in 1198 when the knight
Budziwoj gave this village to the monastery of the Holy Sepulchre
in
Miechów.
Practically throughout the next
600
years
Krzesławice
remained the property of the monastery. At the same time another
monastery in
Mogiła
claimed the rights to the ownership of these
lands.
Krzesławice
were also used as a trump card in a conflict
between Prince Ladislaus the Elbow-high and the monks after the
mutiny of the townsmen of
Kraków
in 1311.
In
1784
the land became the property of the reformed Jagiellonian
University. It was decided by rev. Hugo
Kołłątaj,
one of the most
prominent and illustrious reformers and politicians of Polish Enlight¬
enment era. For a few years he remained the manager of
Krzesławice,
but after
1792
the property was confiscated by the
Targowica
Confedera¬
tion which cooperated with the Russians against the Polish constitu¬
tion and finally led to a second partition of Poland. In the 19th century
the village became a property of a merchant family, the
Kirchmayers
from Krakow. The youngest son of the family,
Jan Kanty
Kirchmayer,
moved into the manor house. After his death the village was admin¬
istered by
Kazimierz Girtler,
one of well known diarists of
Kraków.
However, the most famous owner of the manor house in
Krzesławice
was
Jan Matejko,
who bought the property in
1876
and made it his
country residence, with the painter s workshop situated close to the
manor house.
Matejko
painted here many of his works, especially
the ones which depicted peasants and the village landscape.
It was then when the Fort

„Krzesławice
was built on the
north edge of the village as an element of the Austrian fortress known
as the
„Kraków
Stronghold . During wwii this citadel became a place
of mass executions conducted by Germans on Polish population.
After the death of
Jan Matejko,
his son sold the village to
Teodor
Cybulski, a steward. In
1959
Maria
Burzyńska,
the steward s daughter,
transferred the property to the Society of the Friends of Fine Arts
(Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych)
as the headquarters of the
Museum of rev. Hugo
Kołłątaj
and
Jan Matejko.
At present, the manor house along with the old wooden
school building founded by
Jan Matejko
(today s Cultural Centre),
the
Kirchmayers
mill, and the I7lh-century wooden church of St John
the Baptist, transported here from Jawornik in
1985,
constitute
a charming nook of „a village in the middle of the city .
The exposition presents items connected with the village own¬
ers and inhabitants as well as its history. You can see here not only
archaeological objects belonging to the oldest inhabitants and settlers
of
Krzesławice,
copies of the oldest documents which mention the
village, but also manuscripts by rev. Hugo
Kołłątaj
and
Kazimierz
Girtler and drawings
Jan Matejko
made here.
The exposition also shows the objects collected here in the
1970s
during the action
„Ocalić od zapomnienia
(to Save from Oblivion).
All of them were supposed to serve as the endowment of a future
heritage park. They were also used in producing the model of the

Fort
„Krzesławice ,
the project executed by the Youth Cultural
Centre, the present holder of the place.
The best supplement to the exhibition would be a walk taken
from the Historical Museum of the City of
Kraków
branch in
Nowa
Huta
to the centre of
Krzesławice
which takes only
halfan
hour.
