GREAT WINTER OPERATION OF THE
FIRST WORLD WAR
Warfare in the Masuria-
Augustów
region from 7th to 21st
February
1915
The subject of the research presented in this study is the great
Winter Operation of the First World War, which was conducted on
the Eastern Front, in Masuria and northern
Podlasie,
to be precise,
in February
1915.
German troops were fighting against the Russian
army. With reference to this event, the Germans use a name the
Winter Battle of Masuria of
1915
whereas the Russians call it
the East Prussian Winter Operation of
1915 ,
or the
Augustów
Operation of
1915 .
Irrespective of which name is being used, we must acknowledge
that it was one of the most considerable and significant military
operations in the Eastern theatre of the First World War. Over one
hundred thousand soldiers were fighting on each side in this major
military battle.
This operation had important impact on a further course of the
First World War. It was a sort of a prelude to the
Gorlice
Operation
of May
1915.
Even though its importance went far beyond military

consequences, it always remained in the shadow of major warfare in
the West.
The book consists of four chapters. Chapter I provides
a geographical characteristic of the warfare area. The infrastructure
is briefly described, mainly in the scope of transport capabilities.
Moreover, problems regarding this region s population and economy
are indicated.
Chapter II describes a situation in the Eastern and Western
theatre of war at the beginning of
1915.
Armed forces and capabilities
of both sides as well as commands operational concepts at the end of
1914
and the beginning of
1915
are characterized. A course of events
connected with plans made by each side is presented. This chapter
is completed with a detailed analysis of operational concepts shortly
before the commencement of the Masuria-
Augustów
Operation.
The most extensive chapter III includes a detailed description
of the course of
Masuria-Augustów
Operation being divided into
two regions: Masuria and north
Podlasie.
Struggles initiated by the
Russians that were conducted in the
Lasdeńskie
Forests are described
at the beginning of the chapter. They preceded the commencement
of the proper operation. The author of the dissertation is the first
historian ever to have succeeded in explaining such an important
issue relying on archives. Little has been know so far about this
subject. It was essential to carry out further research to establish
a course of the Operation. An immense scope and not always complete
documentation made this task extremely difficult to accomplish. On
the German side, two operational corps were fighting, the Tenth and
the Eighth Army

altogether

and a half infantry divisions and one
and one third cavalry divisions; on the Russian side, the Tenth Army
-
eleven and a half infantry divisions and two and a half cavalry
divisions. More than thirty regiments of infantry and cavalry as well
as artillery forces, sappers and supplies were fighting against each
other in direct contact and under complicated circumstances. The
struggle was described up to the level of regiments. Every day, from
7th to 21st February
1915,
all these regiments were involved in fighting
several times, and it was necessary to include them in connection
with other forces.

Summary
The aim of the final chapter IV of the dissertation is to evaluate
German and Russian warfare and its consequences in a military and
political context.
Appendices, maps, tables and illustrations are a valuable
supplement to the book.
The dissertation is a significant progress in explaining important
military operations conducted on the Eastern Front of the First World
War. To be more precise, it should be added that the operation was
carried out in Masuria and northern
Podlasie,
that is within the territory
of today s Poland.
Preparation of the dissertation devoted to one of major winter
operations carried out on the Eastern Front in
1915
was possible,
inter alia, thanks to extensive reference literature
(comp.
enclosed
bibliography including solely archive materials and publications
used to write the dissertation). The archive materials are available
at Rossijskij Gosudarstwiennyj Wojenno-Istoriczeskij Archiw in
Moscow and Central Military Archives in Warsaw. An overwhelming
majority of published sources and studies was available either in
Rossijskaja Gosudarstwiennaja Bibliotieka in Moscow or in German
libraries, and even Swedish ones, where a book about German army
losses during the First World War in East Prussia, which is extremely
difficult to attain by a Polish reader, was obtained.
