This volume brings together a distin¬
guished group of social scientists and
philosophers to address philosophical and
methodological issues that arise in the
practice of current social science research.
Based on the idea that philosophy of social
science and social science research itself
can and should be mutually informing, the
chapters all engage concrete issues across
the social sciences in a philosophically
sophisticated way accessible to philoso¬
phers and social scientists alike.
The volume is divided into four parts.
Part I. Mechanisms, Explanation and
Causality, addresses current debates over
the need for
microfoundations
in social
research, the adequacy of graphical
approaches to social causation, the pros¬
pect for laws in the social sciences, the
nature of probability in the social world,
the use of counterfactual explanations,
causal complexity and process tracing.
Chapters in Part II, Evidence, discuss
the use of randomized clinical trials in
social research, the strengths and limits of
Bayesian approaches, the role of compu¬
tational models, the nature of evidence
in history and its relation to the social
sciences, the relevance of ideas from
Duhem to current controversies in political
science, and the prospects for bringing
context into causal models. Part III, Norms,
Culture, and the Social-Psychological,
covers such topics as the nature of norms
and culture,
evolutionär)
approaches to
culture and norms, and the legitimacy of
race as a concept in social research.
Chapters in Part IV address the place
and reception of feminist theorizing in
the social sciences as well as the social
construction of mental illness. Contribu¬
tors here argue for the relevance of
soci¬
olog)
of knowledge in understanding social
science, both good and bad. Finally, chap¬
ters in the last section of the book discuss
normative implications of social science
research. Among the questions asked
are: what morals can we draw for political
philosophy from current research on coop¬
eration and reciprocity, to what extent can
policy assessment be objective, and what
should a science of well-being look like?
