These cutting-edge studies in the field of military history cover important aspects of the soldier experience in the diverse geographical areas in which England was at war between 1272 and 1399, and they consider not only England itself but also Englands enemies. A groundbreaking study of the dynamics of military recruitment opens up a major topic. Following this, three broad chronological themes emerge: the first, deriving from careful study of thirteenth and early fourteenth century primary sources, gives new insights into Edward Is armies; there follow two studies, on Wales and the wars of Edward III, and Scots fighting for England under Edward III; and finally, considering the later fourteenth century soldiers themselves, case studies focus on Brittany, on evidence gained from ransoms showing the reality of French dominance of the war, on ‘regular’ careers in arms highlighted by the Soldier databases, and on archival evidence to prove that the famous figure of the'Bascot du Mauléon’, from the Chronicles of Froissart, did indeed exist as an eyewitness source. This book will set the agenda for the next decade for academic research into military history of the period, both for its focus on careful analysis of original sources as well as its use of innovative methodological techniques such as statistical analysis and use of relational databases (for the Soldier databases, see www.medievalsoldier.org). |
