It is difficult to believe in Sir
Walter Ralegh. There is and always has
been something legendary, something
fantastic and not quite credible about
him 1 The image his name calls up in
the general mind is that of a splendid
ruffler. We think quickly of his
spreading a cloak in the mire in front of
his Queeen.
To a smaller, but considerable,
public, that of historical students, he is
ι
he supremely unsuccessful man. It is
hard to reconcile his achievements and
reputation, or to explain such a whirl of
contradictions in one person. Tnere have
been greater Englishmen; but none so
variously capable, so endowed (and
almost cursed) with a
restless vitality .
He could carry on half a dozen
enterprises abreast s. was historian, poet,
philosopher, writer on naval affaris,
courtier,
stateman,
soldier, admiral,
privateer, shipbuilder, patriot, chemist,
coloniser, empire planner, Member of
Parliament, adiminstrator, patron of
autho,s and scientists and unpopular
thinkers, intriguer, martyr.
