FORWARD
The outstanding monetary discoveries made on the Dobrudjan territory,
some of
wich
are really remarkable, such as the hoard from Uzun Bair
(Mihail
Kogălniceanu, Tulcea
county), or the one from
Mangalia
and many others, have
determine
dus
to consider years ago the possibility of putting together a repertoire of
the Dobrudjan monetary hoards. Duet
о
more or less objective reasons, this work has
required a long time to be drawn up, namely seven years.
Our volume sets
aut
to synthetically present an overview of the monetary
hoards and deposits from the
Danubian Pontic
province, an area where the first mints
appeared on the territory of Romania. Last, but not least, it wishes to reveal important
finds, still unpublishead, which are to be found in the collections of the museums in
Dobrudja and in the entire country.
The hoards
-
coins, jewellery, objects made of precious metals
-
have
fascinated generations of people throughout the ages. The impact which the issue of
the hoards belonging to Darius III, Decebal or of the pre-Columbian, Aztec and
Inca
empires
ha dat
the time, is well-known. The discovery of highly valuable hoards also
incites the imagination and arises the interest of our contemporaries. As far as the
Romanian territory is concerned, suffice it to mention the hoard from the
Strei
river, a
renown discovery, and, more recently the plundering of the archaeological sites from
the
Orăştiei
Mountains.
Our contribution attemps to fill in a blank in the Dobrudjan monetary
research. If, at a national
leve
land for other historic regions, there are monographic
works regarding certain periods and monetary species, we considered that it would

be neccesary to have a general work which would present a comprehensive overview
of the hoards in the province delimited by the Danube and the Black Sea. Besides,
Dobrudja, compared to the other Romanian historic provinces has certain
particularities, which we have briefly enumerated as follows:
is the first territory to be mentioned in the universal histography
(Herodot);
towns have developed on the Dobrudjan seaside ever since the early
Antiquity;
this is where the first coin is issued by the fortified town of
Histria,
followed by Callatis and
Tomis;
it is the first province which becomes part of the Roman Empire, and, at
the same time, the last to be lost;
a dense network of towns develope here during the Roman and Roman-
Byzantine ages;
it is the first Romanian province which is Christianized and which has an
official church;
local coins were issued on the territory of the province: coins of the
Macin
type, Scythian, Moskon coins, autonomous Greek and colonial coins,
Byzantine (casted), Genovese-Tatar and of the local lordship and towns
in the area;
the first
embryons
of the medieval towns appear here as well (10th-12th
centuries);
-
throught its existence the province stood as a strongold against
universally kown empires such as the Roman, the Byzantines and the
Ottoman ones;
-
this territory was a passage corridor for different populations, and, as a
result, it was inhabited by a variety of ethnic groups, thus being a
crossroad for a diversity of cultures and civilizations;

on a confined area (approximately
20,000
square km), a several
civilizations succeded one another the ages;
it was situate don the way of famous trade routes: the route from
Varegues to the Greek, the Silk Road, the Moldavian road;
it was the maritime facade of the Romanian Countries in the medieval
and modern ages;
a genuine trading economy grew here in different periods (Greek,
Roman, Byzantine and Medieval).
Our endeavor wishes to be one of the most comprehensive (exhaustive), but
certain difficulties in obtaining information
-
such as bibliographic an don the
premises
-
might encumber this approach. Unfortunately, many of the finds from the
archaeological sites or the casual ones, which ended up in the collections of the
museums, are not valorized in a reasonable time period. On the other hand, another
reason of discontent is the rush for easy gains, which causes major finds to be
scattered by the finder among the coin dealers for ridiculously low prices. We will be
glad to receive the support of our fellow specialist for a possible new edition of this
volume.
