...Jakob Spieth
is unique in the
sense in which he is atypical of
many pre-colonial. colonial, and
even post-colonial European
anthropologists, ethnographers,
philologists and historians who
tend to filter Africa through
the narrow, insular and often
condescending prism of
Eurocentric paradigms. Spieth
does a good job in divesting his
work of wanton prejudice and
hasty judgement, recording,
transcribing and translating only
that which carves a true and
authentic picture of the Ewe people
across time and space
-
from his
own observations, careful and
extended research, intuition and
from first hand sources drawn from
among the Ewe people themselves.
Thus, the authenticity of this
document lies in the totality of its
conceptualization and compilation:
eye-witness and ear-witness
interface, and the accounts
coalesce into narrative patterns that
flow naturally and with credibility,
leaving readers to navigate, on
their own terms, the many contours
and complexions of the text...
