Summary
Despite the numerous publications dedicated to the sovereign's institution of
Byzantium and the European countries, in our country this question arises much later.
The reasons for this are: the long period of Ottoman domination, the lack of preserved
palaces and insignia, and our "younger" historical science. The investigations of the
insignia, the ceremonies and the Palace of the Turnovo kings indicate that they were
not carried out with the necessary completeness and profundity.
That precisely provoked our interest in the subject and the writing of the present
work, which comes to fill up the existing gap in the information about the Turnovo
Royal court. For the first time in this work, the royal insignia are related to the
ceremonies, the Palace and the Royal churches where they were carried out. This
peculiar trinity enables us "to see" the insignia as a method of usage within their
natural environment. Hence the more complete picture of the court life in which the
Turnovo Kings took an active part during their brief or longer reign.
In the course of our work we used various sources, among which written, artistic,
numismatic and sphragistic. During their choice our attention was directed mainly to
the authenticity and the quality and not so much to the kind
ofinformation.
Of great
importance are the writings dealing with the court ceremony, dress and insignia. They
are illustrated and show the life of the Bulgarian and other Balkan rulers. Different
symbols, insignia, official rhetoric, literature and art were used in the affirmation of
the state institutions. It is no mere chance that so many sources keep the images of
the Turnovo kings and queens as being represented in all their splendor and dignity in
respect of their high social position. While their representations on mural paintings
and miniatures were seen by only a few people, the coins with their images were
accessible to all people in the vast Bulgarian kingdom.
The insignia were the external symbols of official status /crown, scepter, throne,
etc. /with which the ruler represented himself in front of his subjects. These important
insignia were a testimony to the economic might, prosperity and wealth of the
country. They inspired respect and veneration among the subjects and assisted the
symbolic acts in the diverse rituals. During the 12th
-
14th centuries the sovereign's
insignia as well as many ceremonies in which their use was obligatory, repeated the
Byzantine. In the Turnovo Royal court they underwent some changes mainly because
of Bulgaria's specific culture and psychology.
The insignia can be divided into two main groups: The first, principal group
included clothes worn personally by the king: shoes, crown, scepter, akakia, scroll or
sphere. They were obligatory at every ceremony, feast or procession in which the ruler
took part. The second group consisted of additional or secondary insignia, which

1 aided the ruler's activity, but they were not compulsory at his presentation. Among

them are the throne and the suspendium, the canopy /if there is such/, the flag and
the weapon. They were kept in the Throne Hall and were not always taken when the
ruler was travelling.
Toallruler'sinsigniawasattributedamysticalsymbolismandtheyalsosymbolized
the country's sovereignty. Depending on the ceremony, the ruler used one or other
insignia, determined by the palace protocol. Decorated with them, sitting on the
throne or mounted on a horse after the battle, accompanied by flags and crosses, the
ruler represented an absolute master. He was an incarnation of the country's foreign
and domestic policy, using the title: "I. pious king and Autocrat of the Bulgarians
and Greeks in the name of Christ the lord". The insignia were not always the same,
being changed through the years. Some of them fell away and were no longer in use.
They were replaced by new ones. Once their use was established they remained valid
in the royal court and in the ceremonies regardless of the loss of territories and the
political prestige of the ruler and country.
The ruler's insignia were used only during official occasions such as feasts
and ceremonies. They were ceremonial rituals, which were carried out according
to a premeditated plan and with characteristic pomp and rules obligatory for
all participants. The ceremonies included various feasts, receptions, councils,
processions, etc. Depending on their nature and character the ruler wore one or other
insignia according to the requirements of the palace protocol. It represented standing
rules for the reception of, and communication with, the diplomatic representatives at
official and other occasions.
The ceremonies were state, royal and ecclesiastical. To the state ceremonies
belong: the enthronement of the king, the reception of foreign ambassadors and
clerics, the meetings of the council, the celebration of peace

time triumphs, the
elevation of military commanders and dignitaries, etc. In all of them the ruler took
part personally and was the principal personage, together with the insignia which
emphasized his nigh position and divine ordination.
Undoubtedly the most brilliant ceremony was the ruler's coronation which
had important effect on the country and the people. Only the coronation gave the
necessary validity and authority to the King's power. At this ceremony the ruler
made use of all insignia relating to his official status, while for the rest the number of
insignia was limited. At this exceptional in its essence ritual, he appeared in front of
the Royal Court, the clergy, the foreign envoys and the people, bedecked with all the }
insignia which were state symbols and an expression of supreme sovereignty. They
had exactly the effect of exalting the mystical idea about the divine origin of the ruler

and his superiority over the ordinary people.

their feasts and ceremonies. The official audiences with the ruler involved: reception

and signing of treaties. Unfortunately the limited historical data does not give us a
detailed information about their reception, which proceeded according to approved
court protocol. It imposed on the ruler official ceremonial costume, crown and scepter.
In such ways the power and authority of the ruler were demonstrated in front of the
foreign envoys. Apart from the king in full dress and insignia were the high officials 1247

in the palace,
the boyars
in the Sinklit and some dignitaries, who actually took part
in the ceremonies.
The ceremonies were carried out in the palace and the royal churches in the town.
The Royal Palace in Turnovo, besides being a ruler's residence, was a scene for many
state and royal ceremonies which, normally very often coincided.
The primary role was played by the Throne Hall and the Royal Church, where
coronations, weddings and funerals were carried out. This attached great importance
to the Palace and imposed on it the terms which were not demanded from any other
official site. This explains its monumental aspect and impressiveness, which were
necessary for the fulfillment of all the functions assigned to it and for the prestige of
the ruler and the country.
The royal churches were the other places for these ceremonies. They were visited
by the ruler and the
boyars
at various feasts during the year. Later these churches were
converted into the family vaults of their high
-
ranking donors and long preserved the
memory of their deeds. These royal churches were built, decorated and maintained
by the ruler at that time. They were distinguished by their large size, rich decoration,
holy relics and noted clergymen. In spite of their special importance the churches
were open to the multitude of pilgrims from the town and the whole country. In the
course of time they began to lose their priority as a result of their replacement by a
new royal church, and continued to exist only as memorials of a ruler.
It should be pointed out that the Turnovo Royal Palace and Churches were for
both Bulgarians and foreigners, a way of expressing their admiration for the power
and greatness of the Bulgarian state in periods of ascent and decline, for the nobility
and decisiveness of its rulers, for their piety and for the support they rendered to
Christianity. Their existence was an expression of state sovereignty, with the loss of
which came the destruction of what it stands for.
