Songs for the People and Songs for the Soul:
Preferences and Instrumentalizations
of the Ideologists of Bulgarian Nationalism
from the 19th Century

The imposition of nationalism was a long process that went
through different stages and could be seen from different perspectives.
One of them refers to introducing nationalism through songs and
poems that had to engage the "people" in the national cause. For
this purpose some songs, often adopted or even newly created, were
presented as "old," "folk" and bearing essential knowledge about
the past, the Great truth about the people, etc. The mechanism of
imposing of the appropriate songs could be traced to
memoires,
fiction and other Bulgarian texts from the 19th century. These same
texts show something else. The ideologists of nationalism had their
musical preferences that did not always coincide with the songs
they were deliberately imposing. There was some kind of tension
between these two types of songs: the ideologically correct ("songs
for the people") and the others that were in use in private by the
same men ("songs for the soul"). Similar kind of tension existed
in the minds of the poets; they willingly released "songs for the
people," but felt embarrassed to include in their books "poems
for the soul," added some apologies and even tended to give them
up. This paper deals with only few non-fictional texts
(memoires,
introductions, criticism, etc.) and some fictional ones that pretended
to be trustworthy (Petko R. Slaveykov, Lyuben Karavelov, priest
Mincho
Kanchev, Stoyan Zaimov, Ilia Bluskov, and Ivan Vazov).
Some of them demonstrate the mechanism of imposing "songs for
the people," others show musical preferences of the revolutionaries
from the
1
870s or illustrate the complex attitude of the poets to their
own "songs for the soul."

From the Fur Cap to the Sandals:
How Bulgarian National Costume was Created

In similarity to other countries in Europe and the world in
general, the creation of the modern Bulgarian nation was paralleled
by the evolvement of the idea about a traditional costume that
would represent national specificity in a unique and unmistakable
way. Albeit being considered as having nation-wide occurrence
and as resulting from the artistic efforts of the Bulgarian people in
general, such a costume was an invented tradition, which was laid
retroactively upon the past and was used for its reinterpretation from
a national point of view. Although some of its elements, no doubt,
have roots in the clothes characteristic for the rural tradition, its
presentation namely as a "national costume" not only fails to cover
the multitude of regional, local, and functional variants, but to a
large extent mis-represents it as a stable and unchangeable form,
and as if untouched by different ethnic and cultural influences. The
goal of the current study is to trace the gradual evolvement of the
notion about a national folk costume in Bulgaria and to analyze
its gradual conceptualization as demonstrating national affiliation
and representing Bulgarian ethnic specificity. The study reveals
the main points in the history of national costume in Bulgaria and
touches upon several important topics: the influence of Turkish and
Greek clothing patterns until mid-nineteenth century, the decrease
of oriental references in early twentieth century, the transfer of
elements of traditional clothes from the rural to urban milieu, etc.
Special emphasis is laid on the search for "typical" Bulgarian clothes
by main figures of the national liberation movement and on the role
of intelligentsia and the elite in the invention of national costumes.
The search for ethnic and cultural authenticity is illustrated by
examples about the presentation of traditional clothes as a country
symbol at World exhibitions, their aesthetization in paintings by
professional Bulgarian painters, their museumization in art and
ethnographic collections, and their representation on stage as part of
the institutionalized protection of folklore during communist rule.
Aiming to go beyond a traditional ethnographic history of clothes,

the study presents how clothes function in the political discourse of
representing and maintaining national identity, and how the gradual
disappearance of traditional clothes from the everyday life was not
associated with a decline, but rather

National Identity and (Homo)Sexuality
in Bulgaria during 1880s and 1890s

During the transitional period after
1989
the Bulgarian public
political sphere was sometimes full with accusations towards political
figures (party leaders, prime ministers, speaker of parliament) about
their supposed homosexuality. The author compares this situation
with the late 19th century period when political blames concerning
homosexuality were missing as far as the Bulgarian political figures
were concerned. At that time the political struggles were full with
accusations towards Bulgarian politicians that included adultery,
procuring, rape, feminization, childishness, but not homosexuality.
In fact, homosexuality and
bisexuality
were considered socially
and culturally alien to the Bulgarian society of peasants, artisans,
shopkeepers, the very small number of economic elite and mainly
middle-class urban intelligentsia coming from the above mentioned
social groups. That was the reason why homosexuality was
ideologically constructed as aristocratic, monarchical, foreign,
German, Ottoman, Russian, but totally alien to the Bulgarian identity.
In this regard, Bulgaria was imagined as modest heterosexual terrain
and homosexuality was associated mainly with modern, civilized
world and high society, on the one hand, and backward, barbaric,
Muslim Orient, on the other.

Whose is this House?
The Invention of the Bulgarian Revival Architecture

The study focuses on the construction of the notion of national
architecture in Bulgaria since the Interwar period. It attempts to
examine in detail this process through the writings of architects,
art historians and other actors involved in it. The study argues that
the idea of the so-called "Bulgarian Revival architecture" and the
"Revival house," in particular, is actually an appropriation of the
Ottoman house architecture as exclusively Bulgarian one.
The beginning of the study sketches out the attitude of the
Bulgarian turn-of-the-century intellectuals and architects towards
the architectural heritage from the Ottoman period. Although in the
Bulgarian towns this heritage has been largely destroyed because
of being seen as "oriental," some of the first architects of the
young Bulgarian state tended to "rehabilitate" it in their attempt to
create a national architectural style. The idea that houses and other
monuments from the Ottoman period (clock towers, bridges, inns
and, of course, churches and monasteries) are a part of a "Revival"
Bulgarian architecture, similar to the Renaissance in Western Europe,
appeared in the
1930s.
The "Revival architecture" and the "Revival
house" were finally conceptualized after the Second World War,
during the Stalinist search of art "national in form." By these terms
Bulgarian architects and art historians tried to underline the "purely
autochthonous" and narrowly national character of a multiethnic
legacy from the Ottoman period.
Following the overview of the evolution of Bulgarian architectural
interpretations, the study suggests a critical analysis of their main
assertions. It tries to examine to what extent the doctrine of "Bulgarian
Revival architecture" is well-grounded at all. The analysis proposed
here emphasizes that the same architecture can be found in many
other places in the Balkans and also in Asia Minor: a fact that puts in
question the "typical Bulgarian" character of this legacy. The study
shows that the latter cannot be understood unless it is put back in
its historical context

How a Sad Reality Became Cultural Heritage:
Our Old Small Towns

Traditional small towns in Bulgaria are seen as monuments
of the National Revival, and more generally, of the traditional
Bulgarian culture. The article demonstrates that this is a relatively
new perception. During the 19th century public opinion favoured
the modernization and Europeanization of the traditional "Oriental"
towns and cities. Later on, the perception changed dramatically and
nowadays traditional small towns are no longer associated with the
"Orient," but with a "genuine" Bulgarian urban tradition opposed
to Western and global influences as well as to "socialist
urbanism."
The article briefly points out the main reasons for this change: the
preoccupation of the national elites with the "Past" rather than with
the "Future" of the nation, the critical attitudes toward "excessive
urbanization," but also the development of modern tourism.
"Shopska Salad":
How a National Culinary Symbol was Born

This article explores how the Bulgarian culinary symbol
"shopska salad" appeared as a name of a dish in the mid
1950s.
It is shown how it achieved its famous form, sprinkled with white
cheese, not earlier than the mid
1960s.
The appearance of shopska
salad is seen within the context of increased growing of tomatoes

and vegetables in Bulgaria since the
1930s;
the use of fresh red
tomatoes in the preparation of different salads; the ideological
linkage

within the country and abroad
-
between vegatables and
Bulgaria. The social diffusion of "shopska salad" is traced back to
the second half of the
1960s
and especially to the
1970s
and
1980s.
It is demonstrated how through restaurants of the state running
institution
"Balkantourist"
and other different institutions of
centralized public feeding in communist Bulgaria the salad became
popular. The unquestionable success of this culinary invention of
Bulgarian professional cooks is seen as a complex result of the
influence of different factors, including some crucial developments
in the formation of "Bulgarian national cuisine" between late
1950s
and late
1970s,
the international culinary requirements and fashion,
the expectation of foreign tourists coming to Bulgaria, Bulgarians'
own selfidentification of their country with sun and vegetables, the
appearance in Europe of the so called "Mediterranean diet," the
hidden symbolic meaning of the salad colours that coincide with
the colours of the Bulgarian national flag.

The Bulgarian Linguistic Maps
from the Second Half of the

The present article analyses the formation, elaboration, and
dissemination of one of the most stable myths in Bulgarian linguistics
and the humanities at large, namely the myth about the unitary
Bulgarian linguistic space. The concept of the unitary Bulgarian
linguistic territory postulates that the borders of Bulgarian linguistic
variants transcend current political frontiers and reach deep into the
territory of neighbouring states such as Macedonia, Serbia, Greece,
and Turkey. This canonical vision has not been overruled even today
and is still present both in the scholarly field and in the media. The
myth's creation and establishment have been traced through a series
of linguistic maps produced by Bulgarian experts in dialectology

during the last century but especially after the
1960s.
The cartographic
products of Bulgarian experts on language served as containers and
expressions of a renascent nationalist ideology which was steadily
taking shape during the last four decades. They were also some of the
most useful instruments for maintaining the myth of the Bulgarian
linguistic space stretching deep into foreign political territories as
well as a visual tool for its spread inside and outside Bulgaria.
The Paradoxical Use of Turkish Loanwords
in the Bulgarian National Discourse

An important part of the standardization of modern Bulgarian
language was its purification from Turkish words. In fact, Turkish
loanwords (including Arabic and Persian words adopted via Turkish)
were by far the largest group of "foreign" (i.e. non-Slavic) origin
in the 19th century vernacular Bulgarian. The ambition to purify
them seems to be an obvious choice in the context of the rising
Bulgarian nationalism and the emancipation from the Ottoman
domination. The article examines a paradox in relation to the fact
that, at present, many Turkish words are used to describe Bulgarian
traditions and identity, while the vast majority of the Bulgarians do
not recognize their actual origin. Turkish loanwords appear in the
description of Bulgarian "national cuisine," "national architecture,"
traditional crafts, and more generally, of the traditional Bulgarian
society and culture. The presence of such words in the Bulgarian
national discourse demonstrates to what extent phenomena of the
"Ottoman," "Turkish" and "Oriental" life are now perceived and
described as "Bulgarian" both by the general public and in many
scholarly works.

Metamorphoses of Identity:
Balkan Chalgija, Vernacular Music and
the New Bulgarian Folk

Modern Bulgarians, mostly those who represent some circles of
cultural elite, often regard the knotty ball of their Balkan roots with
suspicion, especially when it comes to issues of national identity.
Such an ambivalent attitude towards the inherited Balkan past,
realised as a controversial, yet relatively autonomous and specific
cultural entity, accompanies all phases of the new Bulgarian history.
It continuously stimulates at the same time the idea concerning
this past as of the "other" to Bulgarian national identity, which
supposedly drags to the zone of primitive and uncivilised "oriental
backwardness." Some analysts see here the old dilemma "East or
West?" which ever since the time of Bulgaria's opening towards
Europe, but even today, seemed to have chronically run away from
the alternatives of complementary visions. Introducing the concept
of chalgija (vernacular musical genre) as a testimony of interethnic
cultural exchanges taking place throughout the Balkans and also
as a crucial aspect of Balkan traditions in vernacular instrumental
music that emerged within the context of the mid 19th century
Ottoman Empire, the article focuses on the mixed attitudes towards
some of its modern off-shoots observed after
1989.
Taking a closer
look at some particular, emblematic musical examples in the area, it
is argued that similarly to the dialogical, flexible, that is, non-frozen
nature of the very music, such hybrid developments challenge
traditional stereotypes and bring new perspectives in modern
understanding of identity processes.
