THE HISTORY AND THE PRESENT IN THE SPIRITUALITY
OF THE
FOCOLARE
MOVEMENT
Summary
The flourishing of lay associations and ecclesial movements is with no doubt one
of the most characteristic phenomena of twentieth century spiritual history. It is said
that we live in a new epoch of associations (Chi
29),
a springtime of the Holy
Spirit , recognising in this gift a sign of hope at the beginning of a new Millennium.
One expression of such gifts of God for humanity is also the spirituality of unity,
which was born in Trent from the spiritual experience of
Chiara Lubich
and her
companions during the second world war, which gave life to the
Focolare
Movement,
whose official name is the Work of Mary . Present today in

countries on diffe¬
rent continents, the Movement has more than two million members and its diffusion,
-
which is difficult to determine
-
enhances several million people.
Although
Chiara
Lubich avoided
-
as extraneous to her
-
publicity, her message
of unity is known worldwide. Also in Poland, the prophetic range of her charism,
which penetrated also the social dimension, was appreciated. In
1996
the Catholic
University of
Lubin
conferred on her an honorary doctorate in the social studies, which
was the first among

such degrees which she received on different continents.
The great development and general appreciation for the Work of Mary in Poland
has not led to forgetting the modest and surprising beginnings of this evangelical
spirituality. It could sound absurd to speak about unity during the most tragic moment
of the twentieth century. God s gifts, however, always surprise with their faithfulness,
and widely exceed human solutions. The charism of a founder is always a liberating
and vivifying word of the Holy Spirit, and always evokes reflection and awaits a res¬
ponse
-
interpretation.
This reflection is in the context of theological spirituality research, that is, in
a theological field which, based on the basis of Revelation, studies Christian ex¬
perience, depicts its gradual development and shows its structure and laws 1. The
source texts are being studied so as to analyse the spiritual experience of
Chiara
Lubich and its essential contribution to the life of the Movement, but always in touch
with the Gospel, the soul of theology 2 and with the realization of the mystery of
Christ in the life of a Christian and the Church 3. Thus the spirituality of unity is

seen in the light of biblical experience, appreciating its unity with Tradition, recalling
the thought of the Church Fathers, the
Magisterium
and the experience of saints.
The historical perspective is present throughout the work. Although it cannot be
said that it is a historical study in the restrict meaning of the word, such formulation
enables a better understanding of the development of a spiritual experience in the
Movement and shows the unity of such an experience in the dynamic relationship
between the present and the past. It is understandable though that we cannot speak here
only about the phenomenological method, but rather about what Ch. A. Bernard des¬
cribed as the phenomenological opening 4, providing that beyond the spiritual ex¬
perience there is God s initiative.
The dissertation is divided into four chapters. A historical presentation of the social
and ecclesial background of Italy, especially of the region of Trent, during the period
between the first and second world wars and the first years of the second world war,
introduces us into the cultural and religious context in which
Chiara Lubich
grew-up.
The most important source for the study of the charism of unity and in a special
way for the specific subject of the dissertation, is the transmission of the history of the
first years in Trent, the so-called history of the Ideal . After the analysis of this
history presented by Lubich in different written and oral versions during the years
1948-2004,
after understanding this history as the history of covenant, re-evangeli¬
sation, community and proclamation, in the light of biblical testimony there was an
analysis of meaning, of recollecting memory and the transmission of the primary ex¬
perience as sharing the gift and participating in the charism. In reference to the biblical
significance of memory , its special role in the history of Israel and in the Judaic
spirituality, the meaning of the history of the Ideal is being understood in line with
the prologue of the first letter of Saint John, also recollecting John s typical elements
of the spirituality of unity, which reaches its summit in the new commandment and the
payer to the Father in Jn
17:21.
The reminiscence of the historical experience of the
first days in Trent also recalls the life of the first Christian community (compare
Acts
1-5)
as a model for every community, therefore also of the first
Focolare
community.
In the light of these biblical references, the history of the covenant experience
resulting from God
s
gift revealed in
Chiara
Lubich, although it is always the same
story , because it belongs to God, it can rightly be described
-
as the founder herself
thought
-
as continuously new : a story that is always vivid and calls for a new
conversion. It is the reality present
hic
et
nune.
So it is not only a memory, but also
a memorial.
The skilful relating of the beginnings of the
Focolare
Movement turns out to be
indispensable for the transmitting of this life to others and also for the faithfulness of
its members to the primary experience. In this sense it helps those who follow the old
and new charisms in the Church to have an always deeper understanding of their own
identity. Almost stubborn faithfulness to the history of the Ideal proves to bring
about a dynamic historical and theological awareness, capable of avoiding the risk of
ideological fundamentalism. It also protects against the risk of an exclusively
experimental approach of the charism, which would take into consideration only former

experiences of members of the Movement making it almost normative. It is, however,
a proper and precious model of the hermeneutic
-
spiritual approach.
Besides, the history of the Ideal , the authentic testimony of the insolubility of
cognition, love and imitation provides a real example of narrative theology : the need
for the restoration of this dimension is considered today as a condition of authentic
theology.
The historical perspective also revealed the dynamic relationship of internal unity
and continuity between

basic points of the spirituality of unity which are contained
in a seed of the history of the Ideal . Constantly returning to the primary inspiration,
the witness that
Chiara
transmitted to other members of the Movement, in a creative
and dynamic dialogue between the past and the present, proved to be stimulating and
vivifying for today , especially in the delicate and important passage from a charis¬
matic stage to an institutional stage. Reflecting on the meaning of the history and
presence of the spirituality of unity acquires special meaning after
Chiara
Lubich s
return to the house of the Father,

In the final unit of the dissertation the reflection concentrates on examining the
spirituality of unity in the history of Christian spirituality. From its very beginnings,
the Movement has always promoted a creative communion between the old and new
charisms in the Church. This is expressed sometimes in listening, sometimes through
a comparison, discovering a profound mutual consonance or a new understanding of
one aspect of the Gospel message which God wished to underline, vivify, clarify
thanks to the charism of unity. It is an enriching experience, which made Lubich
herself believe in the ecclcsial dimension of her charism.
In this way, although the experience lived in the first
focolare
preceded the council
reflection, the charism of unity harmonizes with the ecclesiology of communion proper
for the Second Vatican Council. This ecclesiology was later taken up and proposed to
the life of the Church in many documents of the
magisterium.
Beginning with the
statements contained in the apostolic letter
Novo
millennio ineunte
which strikes
a concordance between the spirituality of unity of the Work and the spirituality of
communion , which the Pope entrusts to all Church, the Work of Mary is presented
both in its composition
-
as a home and school of communion
-
and as a vivifying
spirit, as a reality that is in the Church, for the Church and it is the Church.
Today from different sides there is an emphasis on a dialogue which is so im¬
portant to the future of our humanity.
Chiara
Lubich always saw this dialogue on the
foundation of communication of God with God, the God in me with the God in a bro¬
ther . So for her it possesses the height, width and depth of the Trinitarian love, which
God has implanted in every relationship. With such an attitude, the members of the
Work engage themselves in a dialogue, offering their contribution so that the life of
the Church may be communion and Trinitarian communion. The perspective of an
external fortress construction where Christ is present and enlightens each of its part
is the contribution of the charism of unity to the whole Church, and in a specific way,
to the Christian theology of spirituality, as well as light for our times, so often
surrounded by the darkness of a profound cultural night.
Awareness of the gift, accepting it, communion realized in a concrete existence:
these features, typical of the spirituality of unity since its origins in Trent, appear in
a very readable way also at the peak of a mystical experience lived by
Chiara
Lubich
with her first companions and
Igino Giordani
during the summer of
1949.

In our epoch, which feels the need, as Raissa
Maritain
said, to bring contemplation
into streets , the charism given by God to
Chiara Lubich
gives us a bright and
providential answer. It is a mysticism for our times: new , and at the same time, as
old as Gospel. It consists in the mysticism of Jesus and Mary, where the peak of
unity with God is lived among brothers and sisters and at the service of everyone in
everyday life . This is a mysticism that can be justly named, the mysticism of unity.
