The Uniform

The Uniform and Colours of the Polish Artillery
in the 18th and 19th Century
(summary)
The monograph attempts at presenting the process of forming colours
characteristic to the artillery formation, at first in the army of the Polish-
-Lithuanian Commonwealth and later the Armed Forces of the Polish Republic,
which started at the beginning of the 18th century along with the introduction
of the first unified uniforms both in form as well as colours, similar to those
of the Western countries, into royal forces and the army of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania.
The primary colours of the artillery were made in deep green which the
dress, meaning a long tailed habit as well as a waistcoat and breeches, was
completed by turnbacks, cuffs and lining all piped red. At this time the symbol
of crossed brass barrels and bursting burning grenades called also bombs. The
colours and the symbols were taken from the solutions which were earlier used
in the Saxon army, where along with both rulers from the House of Wettin on
the Polish throne as well as with generals serving them and the Commonwealth
such as Jakob
Heinrich von Flemming
and
Heinrich,
count
von Brühl,
they came
to be used in the Commonwealth s Armed Forces.
Another stage of creating the colours of the formation during
Stanisław
August Poniatowski s reign are analised. Various reforms of the state and the
army, undertaken with different results, caused a change in that matter as well.
Due to the changes in the Russian Army, the turnbacks and cuffs piped red were
exchanged into black colour. At the same time the royal artillery the dress habit
was given white lining and the same piping. Only the artillery of the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania had red lining was pertained. However, buttons and all
other gear were gilded.
The author also looked closely at the changes that took place in the era of
the Great
Sejm,
while along with the basic reforms taking place in the state and
its forces also essential alterations took place in the forms of the uniforms of
the royal forces at those of the Duchy. The uniforms were given many national
features different from the solutions already used, based only on the uniforms
of Western Europe. It did not mean any essential change in the colours of the
uniforms of the artillery of the Commonwealth. A characteristic scheme of the
force was still consisting of deep green complemented with black and to smaller
extent with red along with gilded gear and the motif of crossed barrels and
bursting grenades.
The situation was repeated in the Polish Legions in Italy and in the Armed
Forces of the Duchy of Warsaw when the final colours were given to the artillery

and Colours of the Polish Artillery...
such as deep green as a basic colour of the uniform completed with black
lining, collars, cuffs and turnbacks as well as red piping, side stripes as well as
pompoms,
aiguillettes,
and in a private s uniforms epaulettes. All buttons and
gear stayed gilded and the whole scheme was complemented by a strong motif
of crossed barrels and bursting grenades. The idea behind those colours became
so important that the Polish artillery, besides a general form of the uniforms,
resisted the influences of the glorious and perfect French army and the whole
Grande
Armée,
where the artillery s colours were absolutelly different from
those of the Polish one.
Besides it was the army of the Duchy of Warsaw where the tradition
concerning a general form of the uniform of the horse artillery resembling that
of the cavalry was finally formed, however, pertaining all the artillery s colours
and motifs.
The situation was similar to that of the Polish Army in the Kingdom of
Poland, where, although the political situation had changed tremendously, the
traditional system of colours, the motif as well as the rule that the artillery s
uniform should resemble that of the cavalry remained Along with the
introduction of particular and closely controlled rules of the dress after
1815
a substantial unification of the silhouette of a soldier took place as well as
a way of the colours exposition and the artillery motifs used. Besides, mainly
in the case of artillery s eagles, the almost classical composition and aesthetical
patterns were established, which due to their value were copied in the Polish
Army reborn in
1918.
However, the year
1831
and the current Polish-Russian war brought certain
changes to the issue as there was a certain lack of uniforms for a newly formed
artillery units. Hence, quite a few of them received uniforms in navy blue, which
although European in character, was foreign to the Polish artillery tradition.
Even then it was taken care of to wear black, red, and gold and some elements
of Polish artillery s motifs.
As the research led by the author has proven, an attempt at the classical
Polish scheme of artillery s colours was a substitute of an artillery that existed in
the Militia of the Free City of Cracow. It was the last episode in the 19th century
when almost a set of Polish national colours and symbols, without the Polish
eagle, was placed on a uniform.
The realisation of this task was not successful either during the European
Revolutions of
1848,
or during the January Uprising when due to various causes
Polish military elites resigned from deep green, leaving, if only theoretically,
black and red. It does not mean that the classical Polish scheme of the colours
was forgotten. As it was mentioned above, despite several years of break, when
there was not even a substitute of the Polish Army, it started to revive in the Polish
formations fighting during the I World War, and its full form, as a proverbial
phoenix, it was rebuilt in the Polish Army of the Second
Rzeczpospolita
in
November
1918
and following years.
The Uniform and Colours of the Polish Artillery... |

In such a way, sanctioned by blood and effort of Polish soldiers during the
18*
and 19th centuries, the set of colours and motifs became characteristic for
the Polish Army. It happened in spite of its foreign provenience, which due to
time was soon forgotten seeing only national elements sanctioned by national
military tradition.
An integral part of the monograph is illustrated sources, mostly
iconographie
resources used in the research on uniforms.
It seems that the book will allow for better and fuller understanding of the
genesis of the colours and symbols of the Polish Army from the 18th and 19th
centuries.
