František
Kutnar is justly held to have ranked among the leading
personalities of the modern Czech historiography. His importance for
the modern Czech historiography consists chiefly in his reception and
consequent peculiar development of structuralism. He applied struc¬
turalist theses, conceived within Czech scholarly environment of the
30s of the 20th century, while thinking up his own structural functional
approach towards the historic fact. Kutnar s ideas demonstrably stem from
domestic inspiration sources, especially from Josef
Ludvík Fišer
s
and
Jan Mukarovský s
writings, on the other hand he was wondrously
anticipating theses of French historians of the first and the second
generation of the
Annales Scholl,
mainly of Marc Bloch and
Fernand
Braudel, eventually, he notably harmonized with their approaches.
First features of Kutnar s structural-functional approach towards the
historic fact can be traced already in his works from the early 40s. In
Obrozenecký nacionalismus
(1940)
we find first formulations concerning
the structural character of the historical reality, contents, transforma¬
tions and functions of its individual components.
More coherent interpretation can be found in
Sociálně myšlenkové
tvářnosti obrozenského lidu
(1948),
where
Kutnar
expressed his opinion
of the structural approach towards the historic fact the people. There he
pointed out its inner complexity, which is given by the number of mutually
interconnected components and where each of them fulfils certain functions
infungiblefrom the viewpoint of the whole. He also drew attention to its
continualness and convertibility throughout history, which are subject
to spatio-temporal and socio-economic determinations.
Kutnar theoretically dealt with the problem of the structure of the
historic fact in several lectures in the late 50s. There he described the
historic fact as an inwardly structured whole which is formed by the internal
functional operation of its components, being as everything in history subject
to the principle of conversion and development, determined by time, space

and current economic and social structure. He made a statement that the
structure of the historic fact in not an imaginative construction but it
objectively exists because the structural pattern is typical of the whole
world and universe, nature and society. Notwithstanding all

interpret this problem in the context of the historic materialism, Kutnar
was eventually accused

of his attachment
to functional structuralism, and by reason of it his academic activities at
Charles University in Prague were considerably hindered.
Kutnar returned to the structural approach towards the historic fact
in the late
60s,
when he summed it up and succinctly explained in his
paper presented at the Brno conference
Strukturalismus
a historismus
(Structuralism and Historism,
1968)
and consequently published in
Filosofický časopis
(Philosophical Papers,
1969).
In a study of a moderate
size he digestedly explained the essence of the functional-structural
organisation of the historic fact and made his explanation complete with
a structural-functional analysis of several historic facts of different nature.
Thus he demonstrated that his approach concerned all historic facts,
i. e. individual and general as well as short-term and long-term ones, out
of history of politics, economy, society and culture.
The structural-functional analysis method was presented by him as
a suitable methodological procedure for achievement of more thorough,
deeper and comprehensive historic knowledge. Herewith he actually
formulated his statement on the inadequacies of the surviving empiric-
critical method. On the other hand, he did not reject the causal-genetic
method following the horizontality of historic events. He recommended
completing it with the vertical approach which would cover variability
and functionality of historic events; it means it would reach along the
vertical
-
from the externals to the inwards
-
as far as the essence of the
historic process and thus disclose its profound inner interconnections.
Kutnar s idea of the
historiographie
structuralism also included a pe¬
culiar approach towards historic nomenclature and ways of the historic
text writing. It was applied in his interpretation of regional and general
history and, first of all, stimulated his remarkable ideas on the historic
time, long-term and only slow-variable nature of some historic facts,
whereby Kutnar anticipated efforts of French historians in the field of
the history of mentalities and partially also
Braudeľs
theory

durée.

That is why
František
Kutnar can be considered a remarkable phe¬
nomenon of Czech historical scholarship of the 20th century because
his distinctive historic thinking can be justly compared with the most
advanced theories of the then European historiography, i. e. with
theories of French historians, who were striving after reformation of
the surviving
histoire événementielle
approach. However, his personality
is still in some respect underrated because he is usually associated only
with agrarian history, which is merely one of the many aspects out of his
extraordinary scholarly work. Kutnar s scholarly work perfectly demon¬
strates that at least partial elements of the Czech historiography were
equal to the modern European historic thinking. Like the European
scholarship, the Czech historiography attempted to find the way out of
the crisis of the contemporary positivism.
