Views of History and the Present
The Faculty of Arts is one of the four founding faculties at
Masaryk
University
in Brno, its creation linked to the act which established the university in
1919.
Due to difficulties with furnishing and staffing, teaching did not commence
until
1921
and throughout the remainder of the interwar period the school
was dogged by serious material difficulties linked with the absence of suitable
buildings for teaching, as a result of which the school almost fell victim to
the government s economic interventions into university education on two
occasions. Despite numerous problems in the interwar period the Faculty of
Arts was able to gradually build a tradition of quality teaching and science
renowned in Central Europe, which was supported on the one hand by the
founding generation of professors, drawn partly from Prague s Charles Uni¬
versity and partly from the ranks of teachers from Brno s Technical College,
and on the other hand second-generation teachers already emerging from the
ranks of graduates of what was then the only Moravian university.
From the beginning,
Masaryk
University s position as the second
Czech university, standing in the shadow of both Prague s metropolitan uni¬
versity and the politically important sole Slovakian university in Bratislava,
fundamentally affected its development in specific ways. In the Faculty of
Arts in particular some special characteristics, both negative and positive,
sharply manifested themselves. The negative doubtless included the long-
-term underestimation of the school s material needs, so that, especially in
the critically overburdened campus of the Arts Faculty, where the rector s
office was also located for a long time, the conditions for teaching were quite
miserable and unfit for pedagogical and scientific work. The transfer to pro¬
vincial Brno was also perceived by many teachers as a degradation of their
work, a sort of pushing away from the centre of activity. On the other hand,
it was able to successfully fulfil the original vision of
Tomáš G.
Masaryk,
who
had long called for the establishment of a university in Moravia as a com¬
petitive element in Czech university education. Brno s Arts Faculty thus of¬
fered a place for people who did not belong to the main current of scientific
research in Prague, but who in many cases finally got the opportunity they
had been seeking as part of the opposition in Brno and were able to bring
a breath of fresh air to the somewhat torpid state of Czech and Czechoslova-
kian science. What proved to be particularly beneficial was the relationship
of many subjects taught at the Arts Faculty to the territory of Moravia and the
linguistic, historical and artistic-scientific life of the region, which from the
viewpoint of Prague s various humanities had long been neglected.

Résumé
In comparison with Prague, the political turbulence of the stormy

interwar era always manifested itself in a fundamentally milder form in pro¬
vincial Brno. In the Faculty of Arts the number of publicly engaged teachers
was also relatively low, more overt political activity being recorded only in
the case of a few individuals; on the other hand, a significant section of
the teaching staff lectured within the framework of an organization called
Extenze,
which aimed to enlighten and educate the people.
While the interwar period can be termed an era of slow, albeit rath¬
er miserable development in the history of the faculty, the Nazi occupation
and especially the era of rigid Stalinism
(1949—1953)
was an era of profound
decline and devastation for the school on almost every front. After the closure
of the faculty by the Nazis in
1939
its facilities were devastated and after the
resumption of teaching in
1945
the school also functioned in extremely make¬
shift conditions. Despite this its academic staff made a significant contribu¬
tion to the initiation of work on a further two schools, then newly established,
the Arts Faculty of
Palacký
University in
Olomouc
and
Masaryk
University s
Faculty of Education. In the period
1945—1948
in the atmosphere of growing
pressure from Stalinist communists and their allies it was able at least in
broad terms to reinstate the level of teaching and scientific work in the major¬
ity of subjects, which proved to be an exceptionally important investment in
future years. After the communist coup the faculty was formally transformed
into an ideological factory with a strictly defined Marxist-Leninist approach
to research issues, and only the quality of scientific work achieved in the
past and carried forward by a generation of professors with links to the in¬
terwar epoch prevented the faculty from degenerating into the mouthpiece
of the regime and created the conditions for the democratization of scientific
life and pedagogical work after
1956
and especially in the late
60s.
Even so,
we can count as victims of the communist regime several dozen teachers
who were for various reasons prevented or impeded from working, and also
several dozen students who became the victims of purges, and hundreds or
thousands more young people who for political reasons were not permitted
to study at all.
The political relaxation of the late
60s
was beneficial to the fac¬
ulty, bringing about a rapid revitalization of scientific life as well as a sharp
increase in the number of students and the general extension of the school
in its relationship with the public. However, the so-called normalization
of the communist regime, especially its strict phase in the early
70s,
had
devastating effects on the promising trends of the years
1967—1969.
Even
though in provincial Brno a far smaller number of teachers and students
engaged in political activism during the relaxation of the regime than in the

metropolis, the regime nevertheless once again mercilessly interfered in the
fate of a whole range of individuals and without scruples put an end to many
hopeful trends from the preceding period.
During normalization, political persecution, the intimidation of
inconvenient individuals and the incorporation of faculty employees into the
network of the communist secret police seriously damaged the atmosphere
for research and teaching work, and at the end of the
80s
a number of sub¬
jects were in a lamentable condition in terms of their standard. An interest¬
ing observation and one of the historical paradoxes of the modern age is that
even in the period of normalization individual scientists and intellectuals
could work at the Brno Arts Faculty or in its environs who despite the prevail¬
ing conditions (and often thanks to fortunate coincidences) directed their
fields in a very forward-looking way.
Students of the Arts Faculty and some of its teachers stood at the
forefront of the student movement in November
1989
which ushered in the
collapse of the communist regime. Although political interference was finally
eliminated from educational life in the 90s, it was no easy matter for the
school to transform itself into a modern research and teaching institution
capable of competing internationally on the educational market. The qualita¬
tive leap, especially from the viewpoint of science management, did not come
about in the faculty until around the year
2000,
when the number of students
rose steeply and the faculty s success in competing for resources destined for
science and research sharply increased. One of the most serious problems for
the faculty was the continuing poor state of its properties, which gradually
became the greatest limitation on the further development of the school.
Despite this limitation the school can be seen to offer good prospects, to be
grounded in its own tradition, rooted in a university background and search¬
ing for a new path to the future.
