Abstract
The
dissertation
analyzes the topic of a widely understood protection and conservation of
historic organs in the context of the author
s
own practical experience as well as the expe¬
rience of other researchers. The problem of historic organs has been analyzed in the aspect
of architecture, historic conditioning, research issues as well as a broad scope of conservatory
work. Presented conclusions connected widi protection, conservation and restoration of
chosen examples of instruments (chapter no.
6)
were shown against a broad background of
the development of the art of organ building (chapter no.
2)
which took place in Europe in
the process of the development of the organ over the centuries.
Due to the constant improvements which took place throughout die course of history,
the organ, from an awkward musical tool, changed into an artistic creation. At the same
time, organ building developed a number of various sound forms, action techniques and
various architectonic and artistic types of fronts and chests. The growing perfection of
a sound quality was accompanied by the development of a visual side of the organ which
conditioned its aesthetic influence on the recipient. The visual aspect manifested itself in
the artistic external form of a chest hiding mechanisms and sound combinations, and its
representative organ front. On the basis of chosen, representative examples of the organ
fronts from Europe and Poland, the author attempts to show the changes in their style
forms characteristic of particular epochs, centers and developmental direction in the period
ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary times. These forms, influenced and shaped
by two main currents
-
the northern and southern European one, illustrate the evolutional
changes taking place in the construction as well as the architectonic and artistic form of
the organ fronts over the centuries
.
Due to the mutual infiltration of these two currents,
we can come across a number of indirect solutions in the composition of organ chests and
fronts. The organ, as an instrument in which a lot of fields of technique and art are combined
together and which is capable of generating the most extensive and the richest sound scale is
the subject of scientific reflection for the researchers of old material culture, art historians,
organologists, organists, organ builders, architects as well as conservators. The sound of
organ in its richness and diversity has been the source of fascination and inspiration for

many generations of composers. It results in the rich organ literature, particularly in the
music of the 17th and 18th century when in its highest and most valuable displays, one can
discover the most profound of the composers thoughts.
The yd chapter touches upon the issues concerning the role of the organ in the liturgy
of the Western Church. It is reflected in the inner regulations and documents regarding
this instrument issued by the Popes. The organs have been in the service of the Church
since the 7th century and they constitute an integral element of the
décor
of the Christian
temple. They are a visible proof of the love of music whose purpose is to worship God
through singing and organ music.
The organ is a very important element of the cultural heritage of the Church which shows
in this way its care and responsibility for the shape of musical culture. The author presents
legal aspects of co-operation between the Church and the State as regards protection of the
material resources which belong to the Church, including historic organs. The aspect of
the substitutes of organs is also analyzed here (harmoniums and electronic organs) and the
attitude of the Church towards them during the liturgy is also taken into consideration.
The 4th chapter concerns the basic definitions regarding historic organs and criteria of their
classification conditioned by historical, scientific, technical, artistic as well as architectonic
values they represent and which determine their overall evaluation as the relics of material
culture. An emphasis is put on various dangerous factors that the organ might be exposed to,
especially biological damage in relation to which the methods of elimination are presented.
Chapter no.

deals with the problems of protection and conservation, it introduces and
defines the basic concepts of spiritual and material heritage such as culture, cultural heritage,
the best interests of culture and a relic. It also justifies the point of protection of cultural
values. The author also presents in the historical dimension, the growth of consciousness
to preserve and protect the relics of the past. The genesis and development of conservation
perceived as a scientific domain which originated in the field of architecture is also discussed
with a reference to historic organs.
In the subsequent chapters, the author presents the basic stages of the protection of a historic
item which are inseparably connected with the processes of inventorying,
systématisation
and
documentation allowing to adopt the right scope and technology of conservatory work.
The core of the dissertation is the aforementioned chapter no.

which is devoted to
the analysis of conservatory work as well as the activities preceding this process (research
work, the concept of conservation and restoration, documentation and a technical design).
It is accompanied by a historical outline, the account of the condition of preservation and
a technical, sound and architectonic structure of the instruments which underwent practical
conservatory work. Presenting some chosen, representative examples of the organs, the author
takes into account a few criteria such as the time of construction of the instruments, the
person of a builder, the condition of preservation and, first of all, the scope of actions and
undertaken work. Moreover, the author relies on a subjective evaluation of their historical,
technical and artistic values, assuming that the work that was carried out in a sufficient and
explicit way illustrates the kind and scope of work that we can come across in a contem¬
porary conservation practice related to historic organs. The analysis and description of the
conservatory work is preceded by an extensive introduction to the topic of conservation
understood as a scientific domain, involving different views and tendencies which have been

shaped and accompanied conservatory activity in its historical development. The complex
problem of conservation encompassing a large spectrum of action creates a need to define
and specify the terminology of many different kinds of work. Therefore, while analyzing
and describing the action carried out in the case of the chosen instruments, the author uses
a universal conservatory terminology referring to the scope and types of particular work.
Described work shows the complexity and multidimensionality of the phenomenon of the
conservation of historic instruments.
The final section of the dissertation (chapter no.
7)
contains conclusions resulting from
the organ building experience of the author; it also presents the guidelines for the conserva¬
tory work undertaken on historic organs.
