SUMMARY
About Historiography and Society
About Historiography and Society is a collection of author s studies and articles deal¬
ing with the European, but mainly with the Slovak historiography and its connection to
the society. Some of them were published in various books and journals what indicates
the editorial remark at the end of the book. The publication is composed of four main the¬
matic circles: I. European, central European and Slavonic dimension; II. Slovak- Czech
relations in the historiography; III. The new era in historiography after November
1989;
IV. The old and the new themes.
For author is important to indicate and to demonstrate that Slovak historiography
was from very beginning a part of European historiography, even though it concentrate
itself on creation and composition of the Slovak national narrative. World history (or in
Slovak terminology general history ) is in Slovak historiography very new discipline
starting with systematic research not earlier then in sixties of the 20th century (article:
The beginnings of the general history research in the Slovak historiography). But the
Slovak historians, even non-professional (till
1918
most of them) were well educated
men dealing with the original archival sources. All influences and impacts with the West
and East that is an issue which should be thoroughly study in the future.
Slovak history is very close connected with the Czech one. And so Slovak histori¬
ography was and is interconnected with the Czech historiography. Author analyses this
issue starting from the end of the
19
century showing how political and social situation
influenced the Slovak relation to the common Czech
-
Slovak past on the one side and
on the other side Masaryk s perception of the Slovak question in his work The Czech
Question from the year
1895.
And even the interpretation of the newest event in the Slo¬
vak
-
Czech relationship: the division of Czecho-Slovakia in
1993
is still more or less
mythological and needs a serious critical analysis.
The discourse on the new era in historiography after
1989
starts with the global
analysis so called post-communist historiography in all countries of the former soviet
block and follows by the critical treatise of the old and new Slovak historical mythol¬
ogy. Very important task of the Slovak historiography was to make a balance with the
double past , that is with the right and left totalitarian systems in Slovakia which left the
traces in the Slovak historical consciences.
In the last part of the book discuss the author how various themes and events are
interpreted in the Slovak historiography: he deals with social-historical research, First
World War, personality of
Štefánik, Hlinka
people s party, Slovak National Uprising in
1944
and last but not least with November
1989.
