The Other Eye by
Tadeusz
Peiper.
A project on modern poetry
Summary
In the introductory chapter of The Poetry of the Body, the author analyses the reception
of
Tadeusz
Peiper s poetic creativity which remains in line with systemic and structural
discourse frames. The rationalistic, constructional and intellectual aesthetic programme or
worldview which emerges from Peiper s poetry is referred to as Peiperism. Poetry is con¬
sidered as a foreign body which disrupts the uniformity and expressiveness of the system.
The author suggests not only reestablishing the significant role of Peiper s lyric poetry, but
also perceiving it as full of discrepancies and inconsistencies which help create the literari¬
ness of a piece of writing. Too much organization and simplification of the meaning, sensual¬
ity and conceptuality, intellectuality and emotionality, public commitment of art and auto-
telism are just a few examples of the most commonly appearing tensions, usually inter¬
preted as Peiper s weaknesses. The metaphorical key to interpreting his pieces of work is
the physical poetry formula that originates from one of Peiper s articles. He is not only
preoccupied with the process of writing itself and the emotions that fulfill him when he
creates a new piece of writing, but also attempts to touch upon the material sphere of car¬
nality and sensuality balancing between the poetry and the body. His poems, concentrating
upon the major theme
-
introspection, i.e. writing itself, simultaneously become a record
and a discovery for a modern human being. Three cooperative languages used by Peiper are
analysed: the introspective, bodily and civilized. The influences of the former on the latter
ones are clearly visible in erotic poems that are carefully interpreted in the book. When
referring to the body, the poet raises the most important questions of modernity, i.e. he
searches for the border between nature and culture, experience and understanding, sensing
and thinking, between substance and its reflection. He shows the tensions between the
intellectual, distancing perception of the body and the touch binding a human being with the
surrounding world. In that sense, the physical poetry is an innovative project on sensual
thinking, rational sensing of the world, the evidence for the coexistence of the rational and
sensual eyes ( Peiper s other eye ). The analysis of poet s creativity turns out to surpass the
systemic frames of Peiperism and remains the poetry of experience due to the role of fleshy,
sensual sphere along with the controlling role of the intellect and may be exemplified by
eroticization of the presented world described in the following chapters. The author dem¬
onstrates how the fleshy discourse is built by Peiper, how he changes the hitherto fixed
opinions on intellectually fleshless, fully expressible model of literature into which Peiper¬
ism evolved.
The author, in Chapter One entitled Intimate Codes , analyses the concept of intimacy
in the context of Peiper s poetry. Peiper proposes using modern aesthetics of intimacy that
269
stems
from the controversy present during
Młoda Polska
(Young Poland) period which
popularized the shame of expressing one s feelings . He refrains from writing about feel¬
ings explicitly; he uses equivalents and metaphors instead. Such a procedure saves and
emphasizes the intimate sphere through covering it in the shade. Peiper is convinced that
only constructed intimacy is possible in poetry, that is why he uses the intimate discourse
understood as a system of social communication. The analysis of poetic ways of revealing
the underlying personal meanings shows how many possibilities there are to manifest
the intimate lyrical I. The everything apart from words idea that originates in Peiper s
theatrical thoughts turns out to be a helpful tool in texts interpretations. Nonverbal, be¬
sides words means of expression become complementary elements to the written word
itself and as such strengthen the feelings expressed in Peiper s poetry. Thus, Peiper, in
his erotic poems, suggests using his personal love semantics, his personal erotic code of
a beautiful sentence .
In Chapter Two entitled Between Poetry and Body. Eroticism and Metafiction , the au¬
thor analyses bodily and sensual motifs. Furthermore, she considers them to be the most
significant elements of the new idea in art that focuses on problematic issues and Peiper s
own views on the contemporary world. Interpretations of Peiper s poems suggest that his
poetry interplays between sexuality and self-reflection. Moreover, the tension between
the attempt to present the sexuality of the body (material, real body) and the reflection of
the represented, discoursive body remains visible in his poems. Physical poetry is a con¬
stant testing of boundaries of expressivity of the flesh in poetry. Erotic poems are the result
of this struggle and simultaneously a record of the process itself. However, the inability to
surpass the boundaries of sensuality via words, the inability to express sexuality and mak¬
ing the most intimate relations public seem to remain the weaknesses of Peiper s erotic
poems.
Whenever Peiper refers to love and body, he very often uses his meta-fictional code
and vice versa: whenever he refers to writing, he uses the erotic discourse. The majority of
his poems cannot be simply classified as either erotic or meta-fictional poems. Thus, meta-
erotic poems emerge as specific to Peiper, his private and meta-fictional genre. These poems
revolve around the erotic discourse, yet they also emphasize their own autotelism.
A woman, depicted in Peiper s poetry, is not only a heroine
-
a recipient of love s rapture and
a subject of sexual fascination, but also a figure
-
a written body or a part of love discourse,
included in meta-fictional and erotic model of poetic communication. One way to tame
the destructive feminine power is to aestheticise her. The author perceives Peiper s meta-
erotic poems as poetic instruments understood as formal exercises or opinions on art itself.
Peiper s erotic poems not only describe the beauty of female bodies, but also they include
opinions on poetic rules of creating a piece of writing and reflect the necessity to reveal
the truth. The author, in the final part of Chapter Two, analyses the problem of truth in
a work of art which also appears in Peiper s self-reflective lyrical poems from poet s early
period as well as from his late, social period. The notion of truth that serves dealing with
contemporary problems and building a better future is also supported by John Dewey s
philosophical theses. From his perspective, the concept of art being a kind of experience
seems to level the discrepancy between social commitment and independent aims of litera¬
ture, a problem of great significance in perceiving Peiper s works.
The author, in Chapter Three entitled The Sensualised World , analyses the poetics
of desire which appears in Peiper s meta-erotic poems. The body is revealed in this poetry
via some formal procedures on the level of composition and metrics, via the beautiful
sentence , the flourishing system , playing with syntax and using metaphors. The author
analyses the means of expression of the lyrical I and the stylistic figures used to create
270
the love discourse such as syntactic disruptions, fragmentariness, repetitions, ellipsis and
hyperbole, text dynamisations, exposing the materiality of writing, confusion of syntax,
semantic use of the words sounds. Due to these procedures, Peiper s poems are both sen¬
sual and verbal, erotic and
autotelic
at the same time. Moreover, these procedures require
not only the reader s intellect to participate in the reading process, but also their bodies to
take part in it Additionally, they emphasize and explain the dualisms or inconsistencies of
a modern poetry project. Peiper via his physical poetry wants the reader to be aware of
the world, to realize it in a twofold manner: intellectual and somatic. Thus, he wishes to
make the world present and materialize it through the sensual means of expression that
are accompanied by a second thought and an attempt to understand it The senses are not
only tools of cognition, but they also express the totality of experience. Peiper s poetic view
is only apparently subordinated to the sight. Multi-sensuality of perception on the level
of language used is obtainable due to synesthesia. Peiper s erotic poems enable the trans¬
gression between the sensual and the rational, between the body and the intellect. Thus,
the language used ceases to remain a transparent and objective tool and via the embodi¬
ment of a word attempts to touch the world.
